The Good, the Bad, and the Meh. It’s an annual tradition since 2008—the Good, Bad, or Meh for Poker column! The ground rules are as follows: we’re looking for storylines and individuals with potential to grow the game and do good for the industry (i.e. an ambassador with a Dreyfusian willingness to self-promote and generally be an anti-Colman). As always, because someone is “good” for poker or “bad” for poker doesn’t necessarily mean that this person is a “good” person or a “bad” person. Many “Bad for Pokers” are some of the better human beings in the game. And…

The 2014 WSOP Main Event played down to the November Nine on Monday. The headliner? Mark Newhouse. Newhouse (or “Stiles” as everyone will eventually call him) you may remember made the November Nine last year, busting ninth. It’s Responsible Gaming Education Week, August 4-8, you probably know, or maybe not, because “responsible gaming” isn’t exactly something we celebrate in a culture that extols the virtue of being “All In”. We of course all know Adelson is a wealthy man, but I didn’t realize he was the richest person in Nevada (like by far). I mean sure, he woulda made my shortlist if you asked, but I didn’t really place his economic stature in context until seeing this bit of data porn showing who has the largest net worth by state. There is a fine line between winning and losing in poker. Winning poker players don’t always play flawless. Everyone makes mistakes. Even the great Phil Ivey occasionally calls off his stack when he’s crushed. However, the difference between Ivey – and other winning players – is he doesn’t continually make the same mistake. More specifically, winning poker players don’t consistently make these mistakes: 5 Expensive Mistakes in Poker Mistake #1: Playing “short stacked” Bankroll management is essential. For much of the summer, there was speculation that Greg Merson had signed a deal with WSOP.com. This speculation was fueled by the fact that Merson was tweeting about playing on the site and instagramming screenshots of WSOP’s virtual felt. But for some reason, both parties held off on making an official announcement that the New Jersey-based poker pro was sponsored by the poker site. He loves the game, is passionate and opinionated about its…

It seems like Mike “The Mouth” Matusow never stays away from controversy for long. And when things are relatively quiet on the Matusow front, people can just dig into his past to cause more drama. Case in point, Ted Forrest is pissed about the fact that Matusow has yet to pay back $1.7 million from a lost prop bet. Four years ago, The Mouth got drunk and took 90% of the $2 million action against Forrest’s ability to lose 50 pounds in roughly two months. With a vast fortune dangling in front of him, Forrest was able to shed the weight – although it put him down to a…

Iraj Parvizi, a trader from Dubai, claims that de Wolfe and fellow poker player Josh Gould talked him into betting more money, only to split winnings after the games. Furthermore, Parvizi is suing Les Ambassadeurs casino for £10 million for failing to prevent this collusion. This whole mess started when the London-based casino sued Parvizi for not paying back a £185,000 debt. This convinced the investor to counter sue and claim that Les Ambassadeurs…

Sitting at a poker table for hours in what’s a male-dominated game doesn’t exactly seem like the best way to pick up women. According to the Mirror it does as they recently wrote about six poker skills that translate well to the dating field. • Five Card Regret

    Grundy
    17 Sep 2014 | 8:04 am
Five card regret is a variation of five card draw allowing for self-deprecation. There are three rounds of betting. The first is after five cards are dealt to each player. The second is after the players have the opportunity to exchange up to three of their original cards for new ones. The final opportunity to wager is after a card is drawn from the deck making the three like cards wild. The regret is when you realize your discard has become wild, which seems to happen at a rate that far exceeds its statistical probability. Game tip: Knowing the future holds a few wilds, regardless of what…

    Grundy
    15 Aug 2014 | 6:29 am
The law of averages is often quoted for an optimistic view of a player’s future. When applied to poker, it basically says that after a string of bad beats or weak hands, you are due a lucky break or strong hand. This positive luck supposedly makes up for the negative luck (unluck?) and maintains average luck. I’m all for optimism, but lets be a realist here. The law of averages is useless with small samples. If your memory alone can keep track of your poker hands, it is a small sample size. If you work with the statistics of months of quantified luck (I call this profits and losses)…

    13 Jul 2014 | 9:51 pm
Liar’s Poker comes in a couple of different flavors. The first may be more comfortable as it is a tradition card game and the later is not. The game begins with each player starting with two quarters. Everyone is then dealt two cards down. The first player calls a poker hand. The next player has the option of either calling a hand which beats the previous hand or challenging the previous player’s call. If a person challenges the hand, then everyone’s cards are pooled to determine if the hand exists. If it does, the person who called the game loses one of his quarters and…

There is one point in every tournament when every player should adjust their play. It is when the money is almost within grasp and the bubble boy (or girl) is about to be crowned. Most tighten up, some bet more freely, all have a number on their mind. The number of how many players are left. On a micro-scale, we can deal with the easy numbers. My favorite games are single-table tournaments with the top three places paying out. (These are also known by the somewhat counter-intuitive name sit-n-goes. Once you “sit” you can’t “go” until the game is over.) The bubble here is fourth…

In this case, the purpose of the burn card. Beginners may think it is just out of tradition that a card is burned (or discarded) before the reveal of community cards. Perhaps they just never thought about it. Chances are you know better, but if not, allow me to educate. After the hole cards are dealt and the players are contemplating the strength of their hands, the deck is typically out there for all to see. In the event of a…

http://www.pokerprobability.net/calc...as-holdem.html The algorithm behind this MUST consider range. And surely it is far quicker than inputting range manually yourself. The fact that you enter the number of players surely means that it looks at every card the other player must have in order to still warrant being in play with exception to bluffing, i.e. their range. It must then compare this range to your hand and then calculate the theoretical strength of your hand against theirs. No? If no, why would a manual range calculator be better?
