It’s always a jaw dropping moment when seemingly normal men put gargantuan sums of money at stake, thereby putting their lives at the hands of fate. So when Patrik Antonius and the mysterious Isildur1 sat down for an epic session that resulted to the biggest pot in the history of online poker, a whopping $878,958.50, the whole poker community buzzed with unrepressed excitement. The fight for the largest pot was riveting, but it was Patrik Antonius who took home the bacon and, subsequently, the honor of holding the record. Isildur1’s Outrageous Bets Just recently, Isildur1 delivered a…

Shark Out of Water: A Poker Film
17 Nov 2009 | 4:18 amPoker, without a doubt, is an addictive game. It is, despite its non-violent nature, a brutal game – one wherein you can only win money if another player loses his. And it is exactly this element, coupled with the delicate balance of skill and luck required, that makes this game so addictive and so potentially dangerous. It is also what makes poker such a great theme to bring to the big screen. So it’s really no wonder that the movie, Shark Out of Water, an indie film about two men who struggle with their addiction to poker, was such a huge hit, earning four nominations in all at the Leo… -
Dong-Bin Han Bags the APPT Cebu Title
17 Nov 2009 | 4:03 amIn the aftermath of the intense Pacquiao-Cotto boxing match that shook the whole country with tumultuous cries of victory, nine poker players sat down for the final table in the Asia Pacific Poker Tour in Cebu, Philippines. But, just as it is in boxing, only one player would emerge victorious. And this time, it was Dong-Bin Han who earned the title and became the first ever Korean to win an APPT event. An Exciting Interlude Day 4 of the APPT Cebu coincided with one of the most important and most awaited for events in the Philippine’s sporting history. It was the day when Manny Pacquiao,… -
Absolute Poker Welcomes Trishelle Canatella
14 Nov 2009 | 6:46 amSometimes, there’s really no better way to entice people to join your site than to have a pretty woman do the endorsement. And this is exactly what Absolute Poker (30% Rakeback)did when they signed an endorsement deal with model and actress, Trishelle Cannatella. But Cannatella is not just a pretty face, she’s also one of the most impressive female poker players in the planet today. This impressive combination of looks and skill certainly makes her a truly effective endorser. Who is Trishelle Cannatella? Joan Rivers Rants about the Godfather of Poker
13 Nov 2009 | 4:51 amJoan Rivers, comedian actress and businesswoman, has wasted no time in letting the world know of her disdain for the game of poker and of its players. Time and time again, she harped at the members of the poker community with little restraint. And this time, she’s harping on the Godfather of Poker himself, Doyle Brunson. Now the question is, will the poker community take her verbal abuse docilely? Certainly not! How it all started Many will remember how poker players have started to infiltrate the other sectors of the media. Just recently, Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho have been…

Keeley Hazell Gets Naked For PETA
19 Nov 2009 | 11:51 amNo animals were harmed in the writing of this post, except perhaps a one-eyed snake named "Harry the Penis" and he wasn't so much harmed as he was handled. There’s a direct correlation between Keeley Hazell getting naked and her appearing on Wicked Chops Poker. Unfortunately, she hasn’t appeared on Wicked Chops Poker in awhile. So it was nice today to see photos of our official Wicked Chops Poker girl naked for the latest PETA campaign. Joe Cada on The Late Show with David Letterman (VIDEO)
18 Nov 2009 | 6:25 amHere’s the clip of 2009 WSOP Main Event champ Joe Cada on The Late Show with David Letterman last night. Cada managed to get in his Poker Stars plug, admit that he lost $100k in a day after he made the final table…and Letterman showed that poker still has a long way to go (perceptionally) by talking about losing a big pot and being found dead in the back of a rental car. Editor’s Note: We expect this video to come off YouTube at some point today but hopefully by then CBS will have put up their clip. Joe Cada Should Go Back to College
17 Nov 2009 | 8:31 amPictured above, what Joe Cada thinks about us thinking he should go back to community college. Let’s start by saying this: we like Joe Cada. He seems like a good and modest kid, embraces the responsibilities of being poker’s ambassador for the next year, has a hot girlfriend, etc. Soooo with that out of the way…Cada took to the 2+2 forum to defend his 2009 WSOP Main Event final table play, where the haters have come out calling him the ultimate luckbox for the past week. Twitter and poker – they do mix
20 Nov 2009 | 4:00 amImage via Wikipedia Yesterday I shared some of the blogs that I read. After doing so, I got some responses and tweets about it. It made me realize that I have quite a few poker friends and poker pros that I follow on Twitter. I follow about 380 twitterers and I am followed by as least as much. Recently, when I mentioned that I wanted to find a way to cover up my cards when I play online poker, I got back at least 8 responses. Some were suggestions of how I could accomplish that. Thank you. Two were supportive of the concept and one even supplied me with a poker article about a poker player… -

I use Google Reader and subscribe to about 50 poker related blogs. Using Google Reader allows me to preview the current postings and then choose the ones I want to read in detail. A slight break from cash games
18 Nov 2009 | 3:10 amImage via Wikipedia I took a break last night from playing the cash games and instead decided to play some Step sit n go’s at DoylesRoom.com. I have been reading The Poker Tournament Formula by Arnold Snyder. This book is different than the more than 15 books I have already read about playing in a No Limit Tournament. I am barely 90 pages into the 327 plus pages of the book. While Mr. Snyder actually states what types of tourneys I should enter to employ these new ideas, I decided to give them a try while playing the Sit n Go’s at Doyles. I need to give Mr. Snyder credit where… -
Double or Nothing!
17 Nov 2009 | 7:20 amImage by waffler via Flickr Last night I played No Limit Hold ‘Em at DoylesRoom.com while watching a previously recorded interview of Sarah Palin by Oprah. Lately, I had been playing my hands in what I called automatic mode so playing a cash game and watching a little TV at the same time should not be too big a deal. After all, I have been folding almost 85 to 92% of my hands pre-flop, even some of those when I was in the small blind as well. The reason for most of my folding was that the table I was playing on was very aggressive and unless you had a strong hand or extremely good draw,… -

Semi-legal Online Poker: the Regulation Paradox

Never Easy
14 Nov 2009 | 7:59 amI am sitting on a big stack the other day with over 80% of the chips on the table when I get dealt K-K. I raise to $25. The action folds around to a woman who moves all-in on me for another $50. I insta-call. She shows 9-9 and is dominated. The flop comes K-Q-10. I have top set and she has a gut shot straight draw. It is not the money at stake. I probably spent $75 already in tips for dealers and wait staff. I typically take two or three bad beats a session. For me, it is the emotional rollercoaster. I hate to lose, especially when I have the money in good. The turn is a Jack. She hit the… -
Decisions
12 Nov 2009 | 8:54 amA few hands after the one I want to share today went down like this: A player raises to $15 pre-flop and gets two callers. The flop comes all clubs. The first player checks and the second player bets the pot. The original raiser comes over the top another $100. The first player folds and the second player calls. The turn pairs the board. There is a $100 bet. The original raiser two-bets and the bettor calls. The river is a queen. Both players end up all-in. The first bettor flopped a flush. The original raiser shows pocket queens for a runner-runner full house. This donkey play happens more… -

11 Nov 2009 | 7:09 amI am playing a $1-$2 game yesterday in seat 3 and get dealt A-A. After seat 1 raises to $15 with J-J, I re-raise to $50. Seat 5 behind me re-raises me by going all-in for another $200. Everyone folds around to me. I know this player has K-K. Yet, I get the sinking feeling that he will spike a set if I call. But how can I fold knowing he is dominated? I call and say “Your kings are way behind”. He shows pocket kings. Before the flop I make a comment that K-K is a $30 hand not a $300 hand. “Well, I did not know what you had. We have not played together before.” Exactly. -
Heads Up
10 Nov 2009 | 6:37 amPlayers say I am dangerous in a full game. It is hard to read me or put me on a hand. If I am dangerous at a full table, then I am lethal heads up. I was in a cash game recently and took a bad beat on the river after moving all-in on the turn as a 98% favorite to win the hand. The other player felt bad (his first mistake) and offered to play me heads up in a freezeout (his second mistake). In other words, winner take all. I agreed. Here is what happened next: Hand #1: I raise and he folds. I take down the blinds. Hand #2: He raises and I fold. He takes down the blinds and we are back to even. -

9 Nov 2009 | 7:06 amWe all make mistakes. It is very rare for me to mis-read my hand or mis-read the board. Late last night around last call, I made a huge mistake that I hope I don’t make again for a while. Here is what when down: I limp in on the button with 4-5d. A new player at the table is in the big blind and makes it $12 to go. Action folds around to me and I call. Small suited connectors are not a typical raising hand for me, but it felt right. The flop comes 8-2-5. All clubs. My opponent bets out $25. My read is he has a marginal hand and no clubs. I call. For whatever reason, I thought the 8 was…

#916 – Heads-Up with Joe Cada, Part II
17 Nov 2009 | 1:37 pmTo win the match Joe Cada had to let Darvin Moon back in. His best way of closing out Moon was to let Darvin over-extend himself on a bluff or a marginal hand. Poker Pro Matt Keikoan Wins Harvey's Lake Tahoe WSOP Circuit Championship
17 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amStateline, NV (November 16, 2009) - When Matt Keikoan won his first gold bracelet at the 2008 World Series of Poker, he instantly knew the victory was a major breakthrough. Not only did Keikoan manage to outlast a huge field of 1,593 entrants, he also won a whopping $550,601 in prize money. His win, which occurred in the $2,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em event, was a relief for a popular player who paid his dues for four seemingly long years playing on the poker tournament circuit. The financial windfall and confidence builder also gave Keikoan the option of playing in even more future events. -

Dealing the Pinch
11 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amOne of the most sophisticated weapons in any poker player's arsenal, the squeeze play is potent and best used sparingly. It's an advanced type of bluff normally reserved for big bet games such as pot-limit and no-limit. Moreover, it's mainly useful in tournament play, and even then, the would-be squeezer must pick his spots very carefully. As with any bluff, the squeeze play can only work against thinking opponents who are capable of laying down a good hand. And the bettor must be careful to wager just the right amount, so that he won't be giving his opponent good odds to call, while at the… -

And now this!Full Tilt Poker has just seen the largest pot in the history of online poker created in one of their rooms. And it wasn't just two unknowns playing for the cash, either. Two of the biggest money winners in online poker, Patrik Antonius and Isildur1, faced off in a pot worth an incredible $878,958.50!"Isildur1 opened for $3,000 preflop and Antonius called. 8 Nov 2009 | 10:37 pmMan, I was complaining about the bookies suggesting that Darvin Moon was the most likely to bust out Phil Ivey, and what does Ivey go and do? He gets busted out by Darvin Moon!Ivey moved all in with Ace of Clubs/King of Spades against Moon's Ace of Diamonds/Queen of Spades. It's understandable that Ivey would go all-in with that, and it's understandable Moon would call. Unfortunately for the greatest poker player in the world, sometimes the cards just don’t go your way. The flop gave Moon another Queen, and there was no help for Ivey.Sometimes that's just the way things go in poker, though. -
Who will win the Main Event?
1 Nov 2009 | 10:50 pmIt's been hyped for four long months, but the World Series of Poker Main Event is just around the corner. This Friday, November 6, in fact.Odds are currently pointing in Darvin Moon's favor, if only for the fact that he is the clear chip leader. Moon is an incredible example of how an amateur poker player can compete at the highest level in the sport. A logger from Maryland, Moon took out $130 satellite event to move into the WSOP Main Event. Alongside Steven Begleiter and Antoine Saout, Moon has no WSOP earnings to his name. Yet.Phil Ivey is the only member of the November Nine that has any…

“Use Poker Skills for Life” Hosted by Annie Duke
16 Nov 2009 | 5:11 amWith the WSOP all wrapped up, and no more speculating to be done, news in the poker world has been a little slow. And, with the explosion of poker related TV, i’m having a tough time believing that Annie Duke’s seminar “Use Poker Skills for Life” hasn’t already been picked up by SPIKE tv or [...] -
Cada Becomes Youngest World Series of Poker Champ in History!
10 Nov 2009 | 7:52 amGoing into Heads up play, Cada had a more than 2:1 chip lead over rival Darvin Moon. He was easily the favourite to win the event based on that alone. “I don’t know; it still hasn’t hit me,” Cada said moments after the win. “I don’t know what to think.” “I put a lot of time into [...] -
Is Moon just a Luckbox, and will Phil Ivey EVER be able to forgive Ace Queen??
9 Nov 2009 | 2:08 pmThe longest final table in WSOP history has come down to the final two players, and Phil Ivey is not one of them. I wont go through the hand histories of each player’s elimination hand, but Phil Ivey’s is definitely a special case. He was eliminated from play in 7th place, and this time he was [...] -
Doyle Brunson to be a part of 2009 WSOP Final Table
6 Nov 2009 | 8:27 amI don’t want to mislead anyone, Doyle didn’t take over for anyone who fell ill (as the WSOP starts this weekend!). He has been tapped to announce “Shuffle Up and Deal” as the WSOP resumes. Understandably Doyle is excited, and has said “I’m honored and excited to be a part of the 40th WSOP final [...]

18 Nov 2009 | 1:47 amIsildur1 VS Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, and Patrik Antonius Isildur1 is a very sick individual indeed. It's not all sunshine and roses
14 Nov 2009 | 3:09 amToday I wanted to talk a little bit about the upsides and downsides that playing online poker professionally entails, some more obvious than others. Being your own boss and answering to no one is something that many people aspire for and I must say, it feels pretty darn good. Then comes the fact that you can sleep in every day of the week and make your own work hours. Waking up naturally is one of the most satisfying feelings out there and undoubtedly has a positive effect on daily energy/focus levels. Finally, the freedom to travel whenever (and in most cases wherever) you please is… -
Halloweeeeeen
4 Nov 2009 | 3:22 pmMy roommates and I threw our first annual Halloween party that turned out to be quite a blast! There were just over 20 people over at our apartment and though we were planning on having around 30, the turnout was still pretty good. I get the feeling that most people, myself included, waited until the last minute to get their costumes and as a result, several people canceled at the last minute or some showed up 3.5 hours late *cough Nasr cough*I went as Hugh Hefner but was pretty disappointed in my costume. I managed to order 3(!) different Hugh Hefner robes from various online stores and obv… -
Do you go all in a lot?
26 Oct 2009 | 3:35 amThere are a couple thinks that can be very tilting about blogging. The number one tilt-creator is writing out a blog only to have it accidentally deleted (just happened to me) and the number two is coming up with a fitting blog title. Sometimes I sit here for what seems like an eternity staring at my screen trying to come up with a title, I think all fellow bloggers will agree with me that it's probably the most annoying thing ever.Anyway, really the only things I've been doing lately have been either lounging or playing soccer. Poker has not been running too well lately and as a result I… -
Of scandals and miles
16 Oct 2009 | 5:32 amA recent commenter pointed out tons of topics that I could blog about so for the most part he is going to get his wish. Someone also suggested a video blog but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, it's really not my thing. I have to admit though, I also use to look forward to Seri's video blogs just as much as the next guy. Still, I think it's better for me if I put thoughts into written words and like I've said before, this is pretty much all the writing I do nowadays anyway.I just recent had an "aha" moment where it struck me how much I've been missing out when it comes to… -

7 Oct 2009 | 1:55 amLately I've been finding it more and more of a drag to write out these entries. Perhaps I'm getting blogged out? I guess after almost 4 years of blogging there just really isn't all that much to say anymore without getting incredibly repetitive. I definitely don't plan on quitting anytime soon but I suppose my entries will gradually become fewer and far between unless I am traveling to some tournament. There's just not enough to blog about from home and a lot of things from my home life I would never include in this blog anyway.Hmmm let's see. I did throw a birthday party a few days ago that…

17 Nov 2009 | 9:58 amWhen 21-year-old online poker phenom Joe Cada became the youngest person ever to win the poker’s largest, longest-running, richest, and most prestigious tournament, he did so with skill and huge portions of luck, and went from the verge of elimination to chip leader, then beat Darvin Moon heads-up for the championship. With a week or so of perspective, after staying up all night to follow the November Nine online and then staying up late to follow the heads-up match two nights later, my thoughts on this year's WSOP seem to be falling into perspective. In the process of surviving the playdown… -

High stakes online and poker all over TV
17 Nov 2009 | 1:50 pmAlthough the WSOP main event has finally wrapped up, the news in the poker industry has been anything but stale. After the announcement that Jeffrey Pollack was stepping down as commissioner of the World Series of Poker, attention turned to the online poker rooms for a number of reasons. With the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act primed to be enacted on Dec. 1, many industry insiders have been wondering what will happen to the online poker scene in the United States. Although the bill... -

The Airplane Talker
19 Nov 2009 | 12:06 pmCK posted something to Twitter this morning about airplane tilt. It reminded me about the last leg of my flight home from Cebu -- the LAX to LAS leg.First of all, I had a middle seat. Unless I'm traveling with friends, I normally go for a window because I want the ability to curl up in a ball and fall asleep without having people clambering over me. For the 11-hour flight from Taipei to LA I didn't get out of my seat once. That's the way I like it. Toss and turn a bit, sure, but sleep as much as I can. It makes the flight pass much more quickly.I didn't bother to change my middle seat for the… -
A Shame to Be Home
17 Nov 2009 | 11:37 amLast night I arrived home, after 28 hours, from Cebu. Cebu is the "second city" of the Philippines and played host to a 2009 APPT stop. In 2008 I referred to the Philippines as the Mexico of Asia (or, at the very least, Manila as the Tijuana of the Philippines). The location where the APPT event was held in 2007 and 2008, in the heart of the Malate section of Manila, could charitably be described as "sketchy" outside the walls of the hotel. This year the event was at a resort in Cebu. It sounded great in theory, but after my experiences at the "resort" in Cyprus for WPT Cyprus, I was… -
November Nine Errata
9 Nov 2009 | 3:00 pmI'm sitting in a noodle shop in Taiwan (no, really) waiting for a flight to Manila so that I can connect with a puddle-jumper to Cebu. While I wait to play my next leg of Asian hopscotch, I'll download a few lingering thoughts from... whatever day that was that that the final table of the WSOP was played.* WSOP and Harrah's made a *significant* improvement in stage design this year. Last year, people in the audience of the theater couldn't see the table at all. Instead they were forced to watch the action on two projection screens set up to the sides of the stage. This year it was done right… -
T Minus One
6 Nov 2009 | 10:46 amThe long wait for the 2009 November Nine is almost over. Tomorrow at noon local time, the WSOP Main Event resumes from the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio. I'll be on hand as a last-minute addition to help PokerNews provide Live Reporting.Last year the atmosphere outside the theater before the final table began was more akin to a live sporting event than a multi-million dollar poker tournament. As I described it in the PokerNews live-reporting blog that morning,The day dawned gray and rainy in Las Vegas, but that hasn't dampened spirits in the hallway outside the Penn & Teller Theater. -
On Phil Ivey, Full Tilt and ESPN
3 Nov 2009 | 4:46 pmI found myself home between 4pm and 5pm today and, thanks to Elaine, turned on my TV in time to catch Chad Millman's E:60 segment on Phil Ivey.I haven't read the article that Millman wrote for ESPN the Magazine, but I knew the basic premise. Millman accompanied Ivey on a four-city, three-day jaunt to Foxwoods, then Montreal, and then Amsterdam before arriving in Salzburg, Austria for the Full Tilt Million Euro Challenge. Ivey diced for 30 minutes at Foxwoods, where he won about a quarter million, and 30 minutes in Montreal, where he won three-quarters of a million despite the fact that he let…

Largest Pot in Online Poker New Record
17 Nov 2009 | 10:39 amEarlier this morning the largest pot in online poker record was broken by Patrik Antonius and Viktor “Isildur1” Blom (a player we wrote about yesterday) on the $500/$1000 Pot Limit Omaha tables at Full Tilt Poker. The two had been going at it for quite some time with many prior pots reaching well over $100k, [...] -

Veterans Day
11 Nov 2009 | 8:27 amI was going to try and write an article on the final results of the WSOP today, but with it being Veterans Day I just couldn't get my head around writing about something that I felt weren't all that important on a day like this. Maybe later this week I'll give my thoughts on it....we shall see. Today I want to thank all military service members of the past, as well as those that are serving during these difficult times. I am thankful for all the sacrifices that have been made by those in uniform and their families as well. While I'm here I want to share something that I received in my e-mail… -

I have received letters from the Republican Senator in the past stating so. just a short time ago the Poker Players Alliance sent an alert mail out to all members asking everyone to send a letter to their Governors and Lawmakers. It wasn’t meant to be for Ivey
9 Nov 2009 | 5:22 pmIf you haven’t heard, Phil Ivey finished 7th in the WSOP final. This was a huge disappointment to the vast majority of poker fans, including me. I wanted him to win it - yet it was always going to be a big ask. Firstly, he was short stacked. Does it matter if you’re Phil Ivey? Of course he has the skill to build up his stack, but we’re forgetting one more ingredient - luck. Like many of you, I was following the coverage via various poker websites. It seems to me that this final was far more about luck than skill. The amount of suckouts was unreal. Whoever wins it this year… -
Poker is a Game of Skill
30 Oct 2009 | 4:01 pmYes, poker is a game of skill. Of course, it’s not a 100% skill game and involves a fair amount of luck. Poker players know that the long game is what counts, and the more skilled you are at poker, the more you’ll win in the long run. Anyone can win in the short term with a good slice of luck. You know that already though, right? You might know this, but I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day who doesn’t know the first thing about poker. I explained that if they played in the tournament I was playing later that day, they could win it - even without knowing how to… -
Durrrr Challenge - Half Way Stage
9 Oct 2009 | 5:16 pmRemember the Durrrr Challenge? Yes, the challenge that was hyped up and talked about endlessly on poker blogs, poker websites, forums and communities. Yes you may have forgotten about it too, I know I did. But guess what? They’ve reached the half way stage. At the time of writing they’ve completed 25,145 of the 50K hands. Heck, it’s only taken 8 months (note: I could be wrong as am unsure exact start date - it was so long ago). Oh and Durrrr has taken the lead, and is now $700k up. I’ve heard Antonious say recently that they’d like to speed things up a bit, and… -
Sponsors Not Over the Moon with Darvin
21 Sep 2009 | 7:37 amI’m sorry; I couldn’t resist the title of this post. But I love the fact that the chip leader going into this year’s WSOP final, Darvin Moon, has so far spurned any sponsorship deals from the major online poker rooms, such as Poker Stars and Full Tilt. Apart from Phil Ivey, who of course is already sponsored by Full Tilt, the other players have all been snapped up – and will be showing off their well placed logos in November’s final. I mean, who wouldn’t wear a logo for a reported $100k? Darvin Moon – that’s who! Poker Stars have benefited enormously from the WSOP,… -
Pot Limit Cash Games
6 Sep 2009 | 12:28 pmRecently I’ve been playing more pot limit cash games in place of no limit hold’em. On many online poker sites there just isn’t the choice of playing pot limit hold’em, so it’s really just limited to the two big sites; Full Tilt and Poker Stars. My preferred choice at the moment is Full Tilt, simply because it’s the best site for cash games due to offering rakeback. The reason I like pot limit games rather than no limit is quite simple. I find it more skilful and there’s less players who are willing to make huge pre-flop bets - which I like to avoid.

Do the stakes still matter?
17 Nov 2009 | 8:36 pmI was just reading about how Patrick Antonius just won the largest online pot ever. Antonius, for those of you that may not know, is a Full Tilt Pro and is currently engaged in the Tom Dwan Challenge. Antonius happens to be one of the best online poker players in the world. While Texas Hold’em is what he typically plays live Antonius is also a very good Omaha player as well. As I have watched Dwan and Antonius go back and forth I started wondering about what it really proves. Seriously, I am not sure that playing at the highest stakes possible necessarily means you are the most… -

Stack and a Story
18 Nov 2009 | 7:20 amThis is my favorite stack of all time. I'll try to explain. The chip denominations are $25, $10, $5, and $1 from left to right. I also had some bills as you can see. This poker night was a night like no other and will most likely never be reproduced for as long as I play.Early on, I lost my first buy-in of $300 with KK to AA on a 9-high flop. Semi-cooler, but it happens. The guy playing AA never re-raised me until it was too late for me to fold. I re-bought for $600 and from then on never lost a showdown. We've had big stacks at Gucci Rick's before. But the pic you see before you represents the… -
A Stack and a Story
17 Nov 2009 | 8:56 amHere's another attempt at doing something that probably won't last as long as intended. Feel free to copy the idea, in fact, I encourage it. Here's the concept: Post a picture of a chip stack you've taken while at the tables and see if there's a story behind it. Even if it's just a small anecdote. Here's attempt #1:The date was June of 2008. I was bumming yet another free room off of Otis who was doing his duty to God and Pokerstars by covering the WSOP $50k HORSE event. If I recall correctly, it was a Wednesday and G-Rob wasn't slated to be there until the next afternoon.I remember my first… -

Root, Root, Root for the Home Team
2 Nov 2009 | 8:00 amI'm a pretty big sports fan. Not all sports mind you, but enough of them such that most of my live TV viewing is dominated by athletic competition. Since I was born and bred in the North Shore area of Massachusetts, you can imagine where my allegiances lie. Moreso than anything, I've been a diehard Red Sox fan since 1976 when my parents took me to my first game at Fenway. I remember asking why everyone cheered so hard for that Yaz guy.Beginning in 2001, I became a very spoiled sports fan. The Patriots won 3 Superbowls, the Sox won 2 World Series and even the Celtics grabbed another NBA…

Ivey stomps Isildur1 for $1.2 million
20 Nov 2009 | 2:59 pmThe match between Ivey and Isildur1 had been brewing since September, when Isildur1 burst onto the high-stakes scene and took over $3 million from Tom "durrrr" Dwan. The two played briefly a few days ago, with Ivey taking close to $900k from the unkown Swede. And when the match between the two finally got underway last night, Ivey did not disappoint his leagues of fans. The two players started the session playing a combination of $500/$1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha and No-Limit Hold'em. After just half an hour, the two took a break with Ivey already up close to $100k. durrrr takes $750k from George to wrap challenge
20 Nov 2009 | 12:12 pmAfter losing just $22,500 to Marcello "luckexpress" Marigliano in the first match, and beating Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies by a slim $68,000 in the second, Dwan took a whopping $750,000 off George in the final match of three at London's Les Ambassadeurs club. The game was No-Limit Hold'em with a $250,000 buy-in and Dwan dominated from the outset, forcing George to rebuy when his aces held against the Londoner's big slick. He then pushed George off two pair with a massive $400,000 all-in bet into a more than $130k pot holding nothing but seven-deuce. The board read A J 6 3 with George holding A… -

Sunday million and....
17 Nov 2009 | 2:09 amSo close to a big score, but alas it wasn't to be. As i fired up my computer early on sunday evening i entered the warm up, with itself a near million prize pool. Several hours later i cashed for a bowl after beating 4000+ competitors, yet found the last 500 or so just a little too cardracky. The million gave me a huge stack early on and inspired confidence in that win i knew i was due. Despite outlasting 17,500 fellow players, again the last 380 feisty fish found their cards bootiful, while i found rags aplenty-one day it will happen.Been a quiet week really, grinding away while suffering… -
Weekly Update
12 Nov 2009 | 1:12 amSpent the weekend partaking in all sorts of revelries in nottingham...ok i just played some poker with a sherbert or 3, but it was fun.Last week was spent grinding the small mtts online, with the odd stt sesh thrown in. I managed to sat into the dtd 300 in a 10 euro rebuy and took down a couple of mini rebuys on ipoker for a bowl or two. Thursday night saw me drink far too much than is advisable after a meeting about poker turned into a beer festival. Thus the friday journey up to nottingham was spent feeling and looking green, also managed to lose my prescription shades on the way up for… -

The last week has seen me miss out on big cashes more times than a wannabe wag in stringfellos-not sure if that line works but hey who cares! Keep hitting the bar with small mtt cashes, and then hitting the bar for beer to drown my sorrows. I've literally made about 7 final tables on ipoker in the last week, yet my biggest cash has been for like 300 bucks, figure how that… -

25 Oct 2009 | 10:00 pmRather like an ongoing record again I shall bleet on about not really knowing what to say in this blog. I could talk about how the grinding isn't really going on right now, how poker is very swingy both emotionally, physically and financially, I could speak about hands that puzzle, surprise or even amaze even the unamazeable. But tbh i just can't be bothered. It's all a little dull. If im honest, recently i've suffered quite a few cruel rivers, and been taken to beat-aliciousville. Antonius Wins World’s Largest Online Poker Pot
18 Nov 2009 | 9:44 amIt truly is good to be Patrik Antonius. Being the winningest online poker player in 2009 isn’t enough for the Full Tilt Poker pro. He now has the distinction of winning the world’s largest ever online pot to his growing list of poker accomplishments. Previously, Tom “Durrrr” Dwan and Urindanger held the largest pot record set earlier this earlier with a $723,000 pot. Jean-Robert Bellande Out at Bodog Poker
16 Nov 2009 | 1:07 pmIt was just announced that Bodog Poker has severed ties with 25% of their sponsored pros. It’s actually not quite as huge as that headline would indicate. Prior to this weekend, Bodog had a grand total of four sponsored pros. Today, there are three. Former “Survivor: China contestant and poker pro, Jean-Robert Bellande had his Bodog contract expire two weeks ago and Bodog has decided to not bring the outspoken player back for another tour of duty. The announcement means that Bodog has just 3 pros now in the stables, Justin Bonomo, David Williams and Evelyn Ng. Of the three, it seems that… -
Durrrr Losing at a Record Setting Pace
13 Nov 2009 | 10:44 amPerhaps it’s a really good thing he is finally under contract with Full Tilt. Otherwise, most would think Tom “Durrrr” Dwan would have a grim outlook on his poker income. As 2010 inches closer and closer, Patrick Antonius is currently online poker’s leading money earner, having raked in approximately $7 million. For Antonius, his methodical aggressive style has allowed him to continue a steady upward climb throughout the year, without too many enormous peaks and valleys. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Dwan. His particular feat on the other had, is rather dubious. Dwan has lost…

13 Sep 2009 | 5:46 pmPlayed some in the main game this weekend at the Hollywood. Loser $1 after 6 hours. Didn't play very well -- felt like I was the soft spot which was disconcerting. Maybe cause it was all old guy nits. Took a runner-runner beat early, but fought back to even, so no harm, no foul.

The Min. Raise
19 Nov 2009 | 10:50 pmThere is one point in every tournament when every player should adjust their play. It is when the money is almost within grasp and the bubble boy (or girl) is about to be crowned. Most tighten up, some bet more freely, all have a number on their mind. The number of how many players are left. On a micro-scale, we can deal with the easy numbers. My favorite games are single-table tournaments with the top three places paying out. (These are also known by the somewhat counter-intuitive name sit-n-goes. Once you “sit” you can’t “go” until the game is over.) The bubble here is fourth… -
Brief History of Poker
17 Nov 2009 | 4:53 pmSponsored Post: Poker is America’s favorite card game, enjoyed by all ages and all people. With a history of nearly seven hundred years, the game is timeless and will continue to entertain for decades. Whether gambling in Panama casinos or playing for coins on the family kitchen table, the tradition of poker playing has outlasted many trends and will continue to flourish. The foundation of poker, though unknown, is thought to have evolved in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in Egypt with the use of playing cards. Sixteenth century Persia dabbled in betting rounds with their ivory… -
Burn cards aren’t just for ceremony
5 Nov 2009 | 2:20 amI’d wager most you readers know how to deal a hand of Texas Hold’em, but apparently not everyone knows that there is a reason behind why we deal like we do. In this case, the purpose of the burn card. Beginners may think it is just out of tradition that a card is burned (or discarded) before the reveal of community cards. Perhaps they just never thought about it. Chances are you know better, but if not, allow me to educate. After the hole cards are dealt and the players are contemplating the strength of their hands, the deck is typically out there for all to see. In the event of a… -
What Poker Can Teach Us

I have already been emailed this link once and three of the poker enthusiasts I follow on Twitter have also brought it to my attention. What Poker Can Teach Us — By James McManus The article follows a brief history of poker from it’s French origins to it’s current popularity. I especially like how it highlights the game as a metaphor for the American mindset, crossing the Puritan values of our beginnings with the risk-loving cowboy. To top it all off, we get poker anecdotes from two of the most… -
iPhone App Review: PokerGauge
20 Oct 2009 | 4:59 pmToday I’m crossing my love for poker with my love for tech by reviewing the iPhone application PokerGauge. You may remember my past iPhone review for one of the first games available for the device, Apple’s own Texas Hold’em game. Today I have a deeper cut from the app store which is marginally less fun, but a hundred times for useful. PokerGauge is a mobile odds calculator that I deem the mobile odds calculator. While the marketplace for odds calculators on the App Store in no way rivals the plethora of tip calculators (seriously, who buys those?) PokerGauge isn’t the only one on the…

By doing so I hope to reduce the number of mistakes I make and channel my frustrations into writing blog posts which is way more constructive than punching my desk. Although I am on an official big buy-in tournament break I still play the tournaments in my Poker tournament league. Today was a 2000$ guaranteed 6$ buy-in turbo 6 max tournament on Power Poker. Thoughts on making moves in online poker tournaments
15 Nov 2009 | 6:08 amYou don’t win hands by checking; you win hands by betting. My friend Artur keeps reminding me about this when we play online tournaments together. For some reason I tend to forget this simple mantra when I play online poker tournaments by myself. Yesterday for example I was playing a small stakes online poker tournament on Full Tilt Poker. I was doing quite well due to some good hands coming my way. I think I had around 8000 chips when I decided to make a move under the gun with A7 suited. I raised it up to 950, the blinds being 150/250, and got one caller in middle position. The flop… -

14 Nov 2009 | 6:39 amLast Saturday I talked on the All in radio poker show (click the link and go to 34 minutes into the show to hear my words of wisdom). I talked mostly about my favorite preflop moves from Mitchell Cogert’s “Tournament Poker: 101 Winning Moves”. It is no secret that I think Mitchell’s book is a must read for any serious poker player, so if you have some spare time check out his tournament poker blog. Later that week I had a pleasant chat with Mitchell and after listening to the radio show he sent me the following email which I found really interesting (I’m a sucker for poker… -

I’m taking a long break from tournament poker
8 Nov 2009 | 2:21 pmMy online poker tournament year has been absolutely terrible with only two final table finishes all year. Due to my bad run I am experiencing increasing difficulties dealing with the luck factor of the game. I feel like an injustice is done to me every time someone sucks out on me. Watching the final table action of the WSOP main event has just confirmed the fact that luck is a key factor in poker. You can be the best player in the world but if you are not lucky and those coinflips roll your way, you will never win a poker tournament. I have to to face that luck is just not on my side these…

Freerolling into December
14 Nov 2009 | 6:36 amA lot has happened in the last few days in poker so it's definately time for a new blog entry. Let's start with my personal things:Went back to Kufstein again and went card dead in the tournament again. There was only one remarkable hand: A pair of 3's that improved to quads right on the flop. I didn't get a big payoff in the tournament but one beside the table! The Poker Royale in Kufstein is having a big €200+20 Deepstack Event on Dec. 19th/20th and currently quads or better get you a draw on the lucky wheel. You can win satellite entries und up to an entry to the event itself. Guess what… -
Some thoughts about the 2009 WSOP Final Table
8 Nov 2009 | 2:05 pmSpoiler Alert! - Don't read if you are waiting for the ESPN broadcast! Again I spent the whole night to follow the Final Table audio broadcast and I don't regret any minute. Not as exciting as the 2005 Final Table with Hachem, Black, Matusow but still very interesting.I feel very sorry for Phil Ivey and his bad beat. It would have been much fun to see him playing a big stack at the Final Table. This year obviously was the year of the bad beats. One of the toughest was the exit of my personal favorite Kevin Schaffel on 8th place (AA vs. KK with Kings improving to Quads). After seeing his exit… -
Back home in Munich
26 Oct 2009 | 11:18 amSorry for not posting directly after my return but there was a lot to do in the last days.Unfortunately my last two small tournaments in Dublin hadn't been a success either. I booked a small win during a cashgame session at the Sporting Emporium ... but of course not enough to break even for the trip. But nevertheless this was a wonderful weekend. I really enjoyed meeting Silke and Thomas as well as Benny and his brothers again. We had a good time at and away from the tables. Congrats again to Cat O'Neill for her 4th place finish at the IPO. I had played at the same table with here for some… -
Sightseeing & Poker at the Sporting Emporium
17 Oct 2009 | 7:45 pmMy sightseeing trip through Dublin led me this time to the area between the Dublin castle and the Guinness brewery. Lot's of old buildings and churches around. Just have a look at the pictures at the end of this entry. The tournament at the Sporting Emporium had a great structure. They start with a 9k stack and 10 min. levels. Doesn't sound great? Well, the catch is that they add another 2.5 minutes to each new level. With the structure running 25/50, 50/100, 75/150, 150/300, 200/400, 300/600 and so on they reached 40 min. blinds al level 12. With 25 players that night it took almost 7 hours… -
