As always, because someone is “good” for poker or “bad” for poker doesn’t necessarily mean that this person is a “good” person or a “bad” person. Here’s your November Nine… If you’re into 20-ish youthful looking white guys, this 2014 WSOP Main Event final table is for you! The 2014 WSOP Main Event played down to the November Nine on Monday. The headliner? Mark Newhouse. Newhouse (or “Stiles” as everyone will eventually call him) you may remember made the November Nine last year, busting ninth. We’re not into hyperbole, but what Newhouse has done is genuinely impressive. Newhouse’s feat is the most impressive accomplishment in poker since two-time Main Event champ Dennis Phillips won…

With only 27 remaining in the 2014 WSOP Main Event, the question galvanizing the poker community is: “Which players that I onlly marginally care about will make the November Nine?” Ok, the cupboard isn’t that bare. There are some legit “good for pokers” in the field (we’ll address this later in the week with our annual Good, Bad, Meh for Poker column). But the remaining field does lack some in the luster department overall. However, we’re not going to gripe about the field like this is some $235 tournament taking place in the Amazon Room…

  • PokerStars picks Social Media Poker Studs

    Jeremy Olson
    31 Jul 2014 | 4:52 pm
We know that there are plenty of poker pros who are quite active on the social media scene. But who’s the best among them all at social media? PokerStars actually went as far as to rank players in this category. It’s little surprise that Stars put one of their own pros at the top of the list, Daniel Negreanu. We’re not sure if bias is involved or not, but Negreanu had three times less twitter followers and over 70k fewer Facebook likes than Phil Ivey. But on the other hand, he is pretty active with YouTube videos and on his blog at Full Contact. Speaking of Ivey, he checked…
  • Ivey makes Sick AK Fold on ESPN’s One Drop Coverage

    Jeremy Olson
    30 Jul 2014 | 4:19 pm
ESPN started airing the 2014 WSOP Big One for One Drop tournament last night. There are plenty of highlights from the first episode, including Connor Drinan’s painful AA vs. AA bad beat vs. Cary Katz. You can see this one below, and when watching it, keep in mind that Drinan was fortunate enough to earn his $1 million seat through a $25k satellite; so the beat was a little less crushing. Another highlight that you should definitely check out involves Phil Ivey doing what he does best – making great plays. Ivey was holding AK in the small blind and facing an UTG raise from David…
  • Poker Player Alain Barataud busted in World Cup Ticket Scandal

    Jeremy Olson
    28 Jul 2014 | 3:28 pm
Although the poker world wouldn’t claim him, self-described poker pro and fraudster Alain Barataud is being accused of ripping people off in a 2014 World Cup ticket scandal worth $3,400. As the Sydney Morning Herald reports, the Frenchman and father of five was posing as a fake FIFA hospitality agent. And he was able to trick people into sending him money for 2014 World Cup tickets that didn’t exist. One specific family that the Herald describes, the Silva’s, actually showed up to Brazil, only to discover that their tickets weren’t there. Here’s an excerpt about…
  • Viktor Blom skipped Entire 2014 WSOP – And It was a Great Decision

    Jeremy Olson
    27 Jul 2014 | 2:50 pm
For many poker players, the World Series of Poker is the pinnacle of the game, with over $200 million worth of tournaments and some life-changing payouts available. But for Viktor “Isildur1″ Blom, there are bigger fish to fry in high stakes online poker games. That said, it’s not a shocker that Blom skipped the entire 2014 WSOP so that he could play in online cash games. And this turned out to be an excellent decision when you consider how much money he was able to win. Isildur1 was down over $1.5 million on the year before the WSOP started. However, he quickly went on a…
  • Daniel Negreanu earns more than Phil Mickelson, David Beckham

    Jeremy Olson
    26 Jul 2014 | 12:19 pm
Okay, so it’s pretty hard to compare poker players and professional athletes in terms of yearly profits. After all, the tournament buy-ins make doing so a real pain in the ass. But Mirror did an interesting article about how Daniel Negreanu has made more this year than some of sports’ biggest names. The way that Mirror sees it, Negreanu has made over £4 million so far in 2014. Buy-ins were definitely taken into account because Hendon Mob shows that he’s earned over £6 million ($10.25m) this year. Anyways, the £4 million puts Kid Poker ahead of famed tennis star Roger…

Hello people! Ive been playing poker for a little longer than a month now and this is my first post so please forgive me if it is stupid! I just lost a hand and this is the first hand which i have lost that has actually confused me and made me go back and double check but I'm still not entirely convinced! I had QdJd and the board came up with Qc7h4hJhAc so i was aiming to win with my two pair but i was beat by Ac4c which i found very confusing. I understand that his ace beat both my queen and jack but both of my cards beat his four? Surely this would lead to a split pot since there wasnt an…

I was reading the Introductions and we have a new member, Vapor, who mentioned that he works in education (as a sysadmin). The thread reminded me of an article I read long ago about the benefits of teaching poker to kids. My daughter was in a special needs school and they played cards with the kids to help them improve their social skills (making eye contact, taking turns, etc.). I couldn't find that article (although it is probably somewhere on my Facebook page) but I did find this one, the title matching this thread title: http://www.pokerology.com/articles/s...r-to-our-kids/ For the…

I had AK in middle position and I mid raised. The small blind reraised me. This player had been very fishy and loose. I had chip lead and could put him in tough spot with a reraise or just flat call to see flop? What would you do? (I ended up shoving to put this player in a tough spot to call with all his chips. Turns out he had 77, and the board came out dry and he won with a pair)

  • Playing Satellites vs. Buying Into the Event

    Ryan
    22 Jul 2014 | 6:18 pm
One of the biggest questions about major poker tournaments, or even poker tournaments that you’ll find running online will be whether or not you should simply buy-in to the tournament, or if you should play in the satellites in an attempt to win your way into the event. This is obviously a popular question for a few reasons, but one of them is because players simply don’t know what the best decision is. One of the easiest ways to help break down your decision is by looking at your opinion on the tournament going into it. What does this mean exactly? Well, let’s look at it…
