High Stakes Poker, one of the most successful and popular poker TV shows ever created, is coming back for its sixth season. This time, however, a female co-host for Gabe Kaplan will be welcomed into the show. Kara Scott, former EPT presenter, will be adding her two-cents to the commentary from time to time and interview the players in the field. Big Games and Big Names Kara Scott did a wonderful job in the EPT and it’s great that she’s now in High Stakes Poker. Her insights and her interview skills will certainly come in handy in this season, especially since so many of the biggest and…

Doyle Brunson’s Autobiography on Shelves Next Week
5 Nov 2009 | 3:58 amYou better find a good spot on your bookshelves right now as a mammoth of a book is due to come out next week. Doyle Brunson’s autobiography, entitled The Godfather of Poker: The Doyle Brunson Story, is a must-have for anybody, poker fan or no. This book will debut at a modest $26.95 US dollars ($17.79 on Amazon), offering its readers a full 372 pages of snippets about Doyle Brunson’s life. The Child is Father to the Man Of course, no autobiography is complete without delving into the sometimes murky, sometimes magical world of childhood. And with the little information delivered by the… -
Poker Duo Ousted from the Amazing Race
3 Nov 2009 | 8:21 amTiffany Michelle and Maria Ho saw their stacks of hope dwindling as they ran through the seventh leg of the CBS reality show, The Amazing Race. Granted, their hopes of winning the race have never been all that impressive at any point and, really, it was a wonder they managed to survive this far. People were practically rooting for them to fold since day 1. But Tiffany and Maria proved to be hardier than that, managing to survive for six legs of the race. Alas, it was not meant to be for the poker duo, and they had to say their goodbyes in the show’s most recent episode. Hopeful Beginnings… -
Isaac Baron Wins the Main Event at Caesar’s
2 Nov 2009 | 10:49 amIsaac Baron’s instantaneous jump from the WSOP to the main event at Caesar’s is almost like the case of ‘from the frying pan and into the fire’. It’s unthinkable – the act of going from one tournament to another and keeping your mental and physical well-being intact. But Isaac Baron apparently has excellent coping skills and even better poker skills. Despite the strain of all the grinding, Baron managed to be crowned as the champion in the Main Event at Caesar’s, earning himself a sizable $246,928 prize and the tournament title. Online Pro turned Live Pro One of the trends in… -
WSOP 2009 – November 9 Gets Ready
1 Nov 2009 | 5:35 amThe action in the WSOP is ready to start up again November 7th and the poker world is abuzz with speculation about who will win it this year. Will it be the legendary Phil Ivey who, in spite of his sorry excuse for a chip stack, will perform a poker miracle and rise to the very top? Or will it be Darvin Moon who, at this stage of the game, has already amassed a record breaking 58,930,000 in chips? Or will it be someone else entirely? Either way, the atmosphere for the WSOP Main Event will certainly be sizzling once the contestants sit down at the final table. Who are the Top Players? The…

Jeff Shulman Wins the 2009 WSOP Main Event
6 Nov 2009 | 4:28 pmWhen it's your year, it's your year. That’s right. Come some point early next week, when the November NineTM has played down to one, we think that’s the headline we’ll be posting (again). Jeff Shulman is our pick to win it. (Editor’s Note I: reference this excellent thread in 2+2 for a detailed breakdown of starting final table chip counts and results from 2004 to present) (Editor’s Note II: If Shulman DOES win, Jeff Madsen will probably put out a theory that the final table was actually filmed yesterday in a secret bunker deep inside the Rio where they… -
Darvin Moon Still Runs Good; Russ Hamilton Running A Little Better
6 Nov 2009 | 1:48 pmFirst Dan Harrington doesn't get elected into the HOF, and now they stick him behind the elevator where Russ used to be...wtf did Action Dan ever do to anyone? We were at the Penn & Teller Theater earlier this morning as they set up for the 2009 WSOP Main Event final table. Some quick notes: :: Darvin Moon apparently is still on a heater. Last night he shared a $10 Texas Hold’em table game on the floor at the Rio with Kevin Schaffel’s brother and some others. Playing $10 a hand, Moon is said to have run it up to over a $1,000. :: Speaking of Moon, Doyle Brunson was on ESPN… -
Daniel Negreanu vs. Patrik Antonius High Stakes Golf Part II
5 Nov 2009 | 8:41 pmWatch Negreanu Vlog: High Stakes Golf Results on RawVegas.tvDaniel Negreanu and Patrik Antonius continued their nose-bleed golf match today, with Negreanu’s team winning by four strokes (so three strokes total with yesterday’s one stroke loss). There was a bit of a bitchfest after the match by members of Antonius’ team (although not by Patrik) because of how bad the beatdown was today and if Negreanu’s team accurately represented their skill level, but if we lost that much money today, we’d find something to bitch about too. Daniel Negreanu vs Patrik Antonius in High Stakes Golf Match
4 Nov 2009 | 6:34 pmWatch Negreanu Vlog: High Stakes Golf Vs. Patrik Antonius on RawVegas.tvDaniel Negreanu played Patrik Antonius in an ultra high stakes golf match at TPC Summerlin this afternoon. Daniel alluded to it in a tweet yesterday: “Practiced 18 holes today and shot 61. I don’t think that’s good enough to win. We could be in trouble. Tee off 11am tomm” Not sure the exact stakes, other than the rumor is it’s pretty freaking high. As is typical with these bets, lots of side action as well. Rumor is Erik Sagström and possibly Phil Ivey (unconfirmed) have a $200,000 side bet…

A reminder about putting a “Bad beat on Cancer”!
6 Nov 2009 | 4:33 amImage by larrykang via Flickr Even though I have already posted about this topic, I think it is important enough to repeat. I have lost relatives, friends and co-workers to cancer and I am sure you know someone who has as well. Anything we can do to bring awareness to this cause will help. The following paragraph is from my friends at the “Twitter Poker Tour”. They are joining scores of other poker related sites to help raise awareness and money to fight cancer and support research. Please take the time to read this and do what you can. If you can not play in the tourney, please… -
The effects of getting tired hit me again while playing poker.
5 Nov 2009 | 8:07 amImage by deadoll via Flickr Since October 18 I have played in 12 Step Sit N Go’s and my progress is as follows: 5,4,5,5,6,4,4,4,3,4,5,5,5 and I am currently back to having an entry ticket for Step 4 again. Yesterday was a busy day for us. Besides doing some work for Brogan-Arts.com, we volunteered to do some grandchildren watching for Chis and his wife Katrina while they went out and enjoyed a date. He is only home a few days a month since the book he co-authored, “Trust Agents”, was released. While the children are very well behaved, they are demanding in that they want… -
Jack’s back!
4 Nov 2009 | 6:15 amImage by HAURY! via Flickr In my previous post I talked about what I learned on how to play with Jacks. But I may not have taken my own advice as I ran into Jacks in two of the poker sessions that I played yesterday. In the morning session, I was dealt a pair of Jacks in early position. I placed a pot sized bet and was called by one person. The flop was J 10 6, rainbow, no matching suits. I made a 3/4 pot size bet and was called. The turn card was a 2, matching the 6, making it possible for a flush draw. I made a 3/4 pot size bet and again was called. The river card was an Ace. I bet 1/2 of… -
Fishhooks, Hooks, Jokers, Johnnies… Whatever you call them they can be bad news!
3 Nov 2009 | 2:39 amImage by rubyblossom. via Flickr No matter what you call them, they can spell trouble in either a cash game or a tourney. I have been told that there are three ways to play pocket Jacks: call with them, raise with them, or fold them. I have also been told that all three choices are wrong. I have had pocket Jacks. I have called with them, I have raised with them, and yes, I have folded them. The problem with pocket jacks is that they can be beaten pre-flop by AA, KK, QQ and after the flop by AK and AQ. If you don’t hit your flop by getting another jack, your opponent who had Ax, Kx or… -
“Hello Dolly” and good bye chips!
2 Nov 2009 | 4:45 amImage by Malkav via Flickr The last couple of Twitter Poker Tour tournaments I have been in I have run across a hand that has been disastrous to get and play. Back quite a few years ago, the hand, Ace Queen, or AQ was known as a “Doy;e Brunson” because he happened to get that hand quite a lot and lost a lot of pots and a lot of money when he played those two cards, suited or otherwise. In his first Super System volume he is quoted as saying “I never play those two cards!”. Since winning back to back WSOP Main events in 1976 and 1977, the card combination of 10-2 has…

Represent
6 Nov 2009 | 6:31 amI have been running incredibly well lately. Why? I have been representing and selling hands that I don’t have and betting accordingly. Here is an example. I get dealt pocket queens on the button. My chip stack is $1000 deep. I bet out $50 pre-flop and get one caller. I am heads up with a tired player that is also sitting on about $1000. I have not done well with pocket queens lately, but on this day, it felt like my ladies would hold up. The flop is 9d-6d-2s. My opponent bets out $75. I make it $175 to go. He calls. While I am worried about him being on a diamond draw, I am trying to… -
Loss of Control
2 Nov 2009 | 7:08 amI sit down at the $300 max buy-in game the other night and scan the players at the table. The average chip stack is $200 except for one young gun with about $800. He and I make eye contact. I immediately move to an open seat so I have position on him. My strategy is to stay out of his pots until I get even in chips with him. Then felt him. I am making $200 profit an hour for three hours. Time to make my move on the young gun. The first pot we are in together, I flop a set of 4s and take half his chips. Up until now, my play has been great. Reads are accurate. Played position. Played the… -
Hybrid
29 Oct 2009 | 6:17 amColorado has gaming laws that forbid no-limit poker in cash games. As of July 1, 2009, the betting limits were raised from $5 max to $100 max. I played a limit Texas Hold’Em cash game under this new structure the other day. [Disclosure: I detest limit Texas Hold'Em, but played while waiting for a tournament to start.] At the $1 - $2 blind level, I was pleasantly surprised that the $100 max limit game played out very much like the no limit games that I am used to playing. I would consider this betting limit, because of the spread, to be a hybrid of limit and no limit. In my experience,… -
Knowing When
16 Oct 2009 | 7:29 amIt has been said by many prominent poker players that Texas Hold ‘Em takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master. This much is true. Reading other players, calculating pot odds and implied odds in a blink of an eye, and making decisions for all your chips makes the game an intellectual challenge. For me, the hardest part of the game is knowing when to leave the game. Profitably. Most players stay too long and give back their winnings. One night, I was on a rollercoaster. I started with $200, built my stack up to $2000, and watched it dwindle down to $100 after taking several bad… -
Right Place. Right Time
13 Oct 2009 | 9:11 amThere is something to be said about being in the right place at the right time. I am at MotorCity Casino at the $50 - $200 game, up about $500 when I spot a short handed $200 - $500 game with a couple weak players. On this particular night, the casino had to close for about six hours so the City of Detroit could test the generators. With about 30 minutes of play time left, I seize the opportunity and change games. Seat 9 is open and find myself in the cutoff position. I post the $5 blind and check my hand. In a battle of the blinds, the small blind raises to $25. Big blind re-raises to $75. I…

3 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amEnglishman Paul Zimbler broke a world record for the longest recorded continuous poker session during the World Series of Poker-Europe, when he played 74 hours, 20 minutes, and 21 seconds straight. Challengers were asked to donate a minimum of £10 to play against him, with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Betfair Poker added a £5,000 donation and Zimbler raised close to £35,000 during his sleepless saga. He began on a Monday and finished three days later after playing Mike Matusow. Zimbler had to be helped-and partially carried-from the table. During the nearly 75-hour… -

3 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amNo one specifically comes to mind when you think of the premier Badugi players in the world. Badugi is a fixed-limit lowball game with four cards and three chances to draw. You're seeking the lowest low hand but with different suits. Badugi recently made its debut at the virtual tables and the game was finally introduced at this year's World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) on PokerStars. The winner of the… -
Don't be GREEDY! Use Money Management
2 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amMy first book, The Greatest Book of Poker for WINNERS!, explains four basic rules for winning at poker. Rule No. 1 deals with goals and money management-tactics for preserving your winnings at each session. Certainly if you win every session, you will be a winner over the long run. Besides, it's always more fun going home a winner. My book describes two money management techniques-one that I use and one that my co-author Dr. Dan Abrams prefers. Both are similar and can help you to avoid losing back all your winnings when you are ahead. Variance is a part of playing poker. It's a fact of life. -

Who will win the Main Event?
1 Nov 2009 | 10:50 pmIt's been hyped for four long months, but the World Series of Poker Main Event is just around the corner. This Friday, November 6, in fact.Odds are currently pointing in Darvin Moon's favor, if only for the fact that he is the clear chip leader. 22 Oct 2009 | 4:11 amYou may not know this, but I'm an MMA fan. My favorite fighter is Michael Bisping, and no, I am not from England.Today I was surprised to see the UFC have launched a poker room. What are they thinking? You don't even have the option of playing for real money and the software is nowhere near as nice as somewhere like Full Tilt Poker. They've had an interest in poker recently though. For proof of this phenomena, look at the early eliminations in the WSOP Main Event in recent years to find many UFC stars. I guess it makes sense seeing as so many events are held in Vegas at places like Mandaly… -
Regulating US online poker
19 Oct 2009 | 10:00 pmI was reading an interesting article published on the Los Angeles Times website this morning regarding Internet gambling in the United States. You can check out the full piece here.Michael Hiltzik argues that "the activity [online gambling] is unstoppable, so let's regulate it."That statement alone is sure to hit more than a few nerves with the conservatives on this topic, but he makes a good point. The USA is one of the few countries on the globe that has passed any law related to online gambling, yet it boasts the most popular gambling venues, poker tournaments, and gambling-based…

Doyle Brunson to be a part of 2009 WSOP Final Table
6 Nov 2009 | 8:27 amI don’t want to mislead anyone, Doyle didn’t take over for anyone who fell ill (as the WSOP starts this weekend!). He has been tapped to announce “Shuffle Up and Deal” as the WSOP resumes. Understandably Doyle is excited, and has said “I’m honored and excited to be a part of the 40th WSOP final [...] -
PowerFul Hand Series #5 - Toss AJ preflop….no really
5 Nov 2009 | 5:24 amI know a lot of poker players who think I’m nuts. Tossing an ace with a strong(ish) kicker like a jack seems crazy. But, in a lot of situations, it’s the right move. (Note: There are situations where it’s the wrong move…late in a tourney, heads up, short stacked etc…but these are all situations where [...] -

2 Nov 2009 | 12:13 pmWith AJ Benza getting unceremoniously canned from High Stakes Poker, GSN has been a bit coy about rumors of a female replacment co-host. Until today. Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker Catching up!
1 Nov 2009 | 6:06 amNo, they aren’t stealing market share from Pokerstars or Full Tilt, but they are adopting some of the “industry standards” that both major sites have rolled out over the past few months. This week UB and Absolute Poker are both unveiling synchronized breaks. The breaks will occur at 55 min past the hour, and have [...] -

Halloweeeeeen
4 Nov 2009 | 3:22 pmMy roommates and I threw our first annual Halloween party that turned out to be quite a blast! There were just over 20 people over at our apartment and though we were planning on having around 30, the turnout was still pretty good. I get the feeling that most people, myself included, waited until the last minute to get their costumes and as a result, several people canceled at the last minute or some showed up 3.5 hours late *cough Nasr cough*I went as Hugh Hefner but was pretty disappointed in my costume. I managed to order 3(!) different Hugh Hefner robes from various online stores and obv… -
Do you go all in a lot?
26 Oct 2009 | 3:35 amThere are a couple thinks that can be very tilting about blogging. The number one tilt-creator is writing out a blog only to have it accidentally deleted (just happened to me) and the number two is coming up with a fitting blog title. Sometimes I sit here for what seems like an eternity staring at my screen trying to come up with a title, I think all fellow bloggers will agree with me that it's probably the most annoying thing ever.Anyway, really the only things I've been doing lately have been either lounging or playing soccer. Poker has not been running too well lately and as a result I… -
Of scandals and miles
16 Oct 2009 | 5:32 amA recent commenter pointed out tons of topics that I could blog about so for the most part he is going to get his wish. Someone also suggested a video blog but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, it's really not my thing. I have to admit though, I also use to look forward to Seri's video blogs just as much as the next guy. Still, I think it's better for me if I put thoughts into written words and like I've said before, this is pretty much all the writing I do nowadays anyway.I just recent had an "aha" moment where it struck me how much I've been missing out when it comes to… -
Time's a flyin'
7 Oct 2009 | 1:55 amLately I've been finding it more and more of a drag to write out these entries. Perhaps I'm getting blogged out? I guess after almost 4 years of blogging there just really isn't all that much to say anymore without getting incredibly repetitive. I definitely don't plan on quitting anytime soon but I suppose my entries will gradually become fewer and far between unless I am traveling to some tournament. There's just not enough to blog about from home and a lot of things from my home life I would never include in this blog anyway.Hmmm let's see. I did throw a birthday party a few days ago that… -
A brief update
27 Sep 2009 | 2:05 pmThe mini trip to Hamburg was of course awesome. The Varekai show turned out be much better than expected, I would even dare to say that it topped most of the Cirque du Soleil shows in Vegas! I think they're only in Hamburg for a few more days so anyone who lives in the area should do themself a favor and go see the show!Shows and musicals are something I've only recently been able to appreciate for some reason. I remember my mom forcing me go see Les Miserables in London back when I was 13 and me hating it, whereas given the opportunity now I would of course love to see it! I have only been…

One more day
6 Nov 2009 | 3:14 pmIt's Friday afternoon in Las Vegas and all of the players are hanging out with their family and friends. Many of them are having parties this afternoon as a thank-you to everyone who has come out to support them. Kevin Schaffel is even taking his entire 90-person contingent to the Terry Fator show at the Mirage! All of them are finding ways to relax and be ready for Saturday's action. As for me, the morning started nice and early with a special ESPN Inside Deal featuring Peter Eastgate. As we... -

Coming to Terms with Proper Poker Lingo
22 Oct 2009 | 9:07 amAs any player worth his — or her — salt knows, poker has what amounts to its own secret language. There are donks and donkeys, which do not mean what they mean in day to day language. There are various disparaging terms, as well as praising ones. If all you know of poker lingo comes from TV and movies, you need to reevaluate what you think you know, otherwise you might find yourself in a very tight spot. Antes have become almost obsolete, for instance, in all but the most traditional poker games. They have been replaced by big blinds and small blinds. There are board cards, or… -
Common Beginner Mistakes In Poker: Watch Out For Them!
17 Oct 2009 | 2:52 pmWhen you are just starting out – I can promise that you are going to make a heck of a lot of mistakes in poker. Honestly, I do not think that anyone who just starts out does not make some of these common mistakes. We are going to outline just a few of them, for all you beginners out there – make sure that you read this so you don’t repeat these particular mistakes. First and foremost, most beginners play way too many hands. It happens because most people as soon as they sit down, they want to play. To be quite frank, that is not always what is going to happen, so make sure you… -
T.J Cloutier: Who Is He?
1 Oct 2009 | 1:39 pmWhen you think about it — T.J Cloutier what is the first thing that usually comes to mind? With me – it is grandpa, however this guy is a shark on the poker table! T.J Cloutier has been playing for quite a while and although he is married with six kids – he is certainly one of the best … best poker players in the world. T.J Cloutier has actually ranked in several polls as not only one of the famous poker players, but as one of the most aggressive. This guy is absolutely a legend in the poker world and I have to say that he is certainly scary when you go up against him! So go… -
Winning At Micro Stakes Poker
20 Sep 2009 | 5:35 pmWhen many players are looking for a consistent way to begin making a reliable income through playing online poker, it is common to at least consider spending some time at learning how to crack the micro stakes poker games that are so popular. This is particularly popular for people making the transition from free poker games with play money to player for actual cash as the style of play at a micro stakes poker is often very similar to the play money tables. However, learning how to with at micro stakes poker takes both time and patience, and the super tight, aggressive style of play leaves… -
Online Poker Vs. Traditional Poker!
18 Sep 2009 | 4:00 pmNow that you have made the decision to switch from traditional poker to online poker … there are a few things that you need to know. Poker is something that can be played the same way online or face-to-face that is the first thing that you need to remember. The rules are exactly the same; however the form that you play is different. When you are first starting out online, you need to make sure that you do your research. To be perfectly honest, researching the website as well as how to play online poker itself is very critical to how well you are going to do in the game. Poker is poker…

T Minus One
6 Nov 2009 | 10:46 amThe long wait for the 2009 November Nine is almost over. Tomorrow at noon local time, the WSOP Main Event resumes from the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio. I'll be on hand as a last-minute addition to help PokerNews provide Live Reporting.Last year the atmosphere outside the theater before the final table began was more akin to a live sporting event than a multi-million dollar poker tournament. As I described it in the PokerNews live-reporting blog that morning,The day dawned gray and rainy in Las Vegas, but that hasn't dampened spirits in the hallway outside the Penn & Teller Theater. -
On Phil Ivey, Full Tilt and ESPN
3 Nov 2009 | 4:46 pmI found myself home between 4pm and 5pm today and, thanks to Elaine, turned on my TV in time to catch Chad Millman's E:60 segment on Phil Ivey.I haven't read the article that Millman wrote for ESPN the Magazine, but I knew the basic premise. Millman accompanied Ivey on a four-city, three-day jaunt to Foxwoods, then Montreal, and then Amsterdam before arriving in Salzburg, Austria for the Full Tilt Million Euro Challenge. Ivey diced for 30 minutes at Foxwoods, where he won about a quarter million, and 30 minutes in Montreal, where he won three-quarters of a million despite the fact that he let… -
Laugh and the World Laughs With You
30 Oct 2009 | 5:08 pmLast night I played some more NLHE at Venetian and found myself in an enviable position: on the immediate left of an extremely nice fellow who was an absolutely horrible poker player. It gave me an opportunity to practice making a losing player feel like he was having fun. I chatted about his home, his work, his Vegas trip and anything else I could. It was effective enough that after I stacked him a second time, we had a good laugh about it. He raised preflop and noted that I hadn't seen a flop in a while. I told him just for that I'd call him. I flopped top two and got his whole stack, with… -
Big-Bet Poker
25 Oct 2009 | 12:48 pmIn what I'm sure will come as blasphemy to certain parties, I've been playing a bit of NLHE lately. I think I've become an action junkie because after all the LHE I've played, NLHE seems dull.Dull but profitable, that is.I had forgotten how poorly typical $1-$2 players play. At Borgata in 2007 the $10-$20 players were just as awful as the $1-$2 players, and in many cases worse. In Vegas today the small pool of LHE players is made up mainly of LHE diehards. They may not be great but they're more skilled than Random JoeDonkey.$1-$2 games, on the other hand, are full of terribad spewtards. -

23 Oct 2009 | 9:55 amI make my living writing. It's something I love and something that constantly presents challenges. One of the beliefs I've long held about writing -- even before I made it a profession -- is that the best writing is collaborative. An extra set of eyes will make any piece of writing significantly stronger than it would otherwise be without those eyes. I can't count how many times CK has given me suggestions, guidance, or constructive criticism on my own work that has made it immensely better than it would have been without her feedback. Whatever opinion people have of the pieces I've produced…

I have received letters from the Republican Senator in the past stating so. just a short time ago the Poker Players Alliance sent an alert mail out to all members asking everyone to send a letter to their Governors and Lawmakers. Sending these letters only take about 60 seconds when using the tools that are available at http://theppa.org/ . Poker is a Game of Skill
30 Oct 2009 | 4:01 pmYes, poker is a game of skill. Of course, it’s not a 100% skill game and involves a fair amount of luck. Poker players know that the long game is what counts, and the more skilled you are at poker, the more you’ll win in the long run. Anyone can win in the short term with a good slice of luck. You know that already though, right? You might know this, but I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day who doesn’t know the first thing about poker. I explained that if they played in the tournament I was playing later that day, they could win it - even without knowing how to… -
Durrrr Challenge - Half Way Stage
9 Oct 2009 | 5:16 pmRemember the Durrrr Challenge? Yes, the challenge that was hyped up and talked about endlessly on poker blogs, poker websites, forums and communities. Yes you may have forgotten about it too, I know I did. But guess what? They’ve reached the half way stage. At the time of writing they’ve completed 25,145 of the 50K hands. Heck, it’s only taken 8 months (note: I could be wrong as am unsure exact start date - it was so long ago). Oh and Durrrr has taken the lead, and is now $700k up. I’ve heard Antonious say recently that they’d like to speed things up a bit, and… -
Sponsors Not Over the Moon with Darvin
21 Sep 2009 | 7:37 amI’m sorry; I couldn’t resist the title of this post. But I love the fact that the chip leader going into this year’s WSOP final, Darvin Moon, has so far spurned any sponsorship deals from the major online poker rooms, such as Poker Stars and Full Tilt. Apart from Phil Ivey, who of course is already sponsored by Full Tilt, the other players have all been snapped up – and will be showing off their well placed logos in November’s final. 6 Sep 2009 | 12:28 pmRecently I’ve been playing more pot limit cash games in place of no limit hold’em. On many online poker sites there just isn’t the choice of playing pot limit hold’em, so it’s really just limited to the two big sites; Full Tilt and Poker Stars. My preferred choice at the moment is Full Tilt, simply because it’s the best site for cash games due to offering rakeback. The reason I like pot limit games rather than no limit is quite simple. I find it more skilful and there’s less players who are willing to make huge pre-flop bets - which I like to avoid. -
The Changing Landscape of Online Poker
22 Aug 2009 | 10:58 amI first started playing online poker almost 10 years ago. It was very different then; there was no Poker Stars or Full Tilt Poker, and there were fewer players. After all this was before Chris Moneymaker turned a $40 punt into millions at the WSOP, and thereby starting the online poker boom - for which he is credited. Indeed, many of today’s online poker players fall into two camps “pre-Moneymaker” and “post-Moneymaker”. I’m in the pre-camp and I know I’m outnumbered – but that’s fine with me. How has the online poker landscape changed in the last decade? Well…

Kara Scott will be High Stakes Poker Hostess
5 Nov 2009 | 12:17 amIt looks like the rumor mill was right about this one. Just a few days ago there was a thread on a popular forum suggesting that Kara Scott would be the person to replace A.J. Benza on High Stakes Poker. Apparently it has turned out to be true. They announcement will be made shortly from what i understand. Now we can put all the speculation to rest although it was rather amusing to hear peoples thoughts on who should replace Benza. Kara will certainly be easy on the eyes. I wish her luck in her new position, she’s gonna need it standing next to Gabe. Social Bookmarking -

WPT purchased by Party Gaming for $12 Million
3 Nov 2009 | 7:26 amYes the World Poker Tour has yet another owner. Personally, I believe this may be the best scenario for the troubled WPT. As you may well know the WPT has had trouble sustaining ownership. The stock has dropped dramatically over the years and is currently hovering around $1.41 per share. Mike Sexton being a major player with both Party Gaming and the WPT gives instant credibility to this marriage and the vision to make it profitable for both sides. Of all the owners the WPT could have this is the most natural fit in my opinion. Let’s hope it works out well. Recommended Resources…

Root, Root, Root for the Home Team
2 Nov 2009 | 8:00 amI'm a pretty big sports fan. Not all sports mind you, but enough of them such that most of my live TV viewing is dominated by athletic competition. Since I was born and bred in the North Shore area of Massachusetts, you can imagine where my allegiances lie. Moreso than anything, I've been a diehard Red Sox fan since 1976 when my parents took me to my first game at Fenway. I remember asking why everyone cheered so hard for that Yaz guy.Beginning in 2001, I became a very spoiled sports fan. The Patriots won 3 Superbowls, the Sox won 2 World Series and even the Celtics grabbed another NBA… -

Metal Wednesday?
13 Oct 2009 | 6:13 pmWrong day. No Steel Foot. Whatever.Ozzy has a new guitarist if you hadn't heard. You may not even care. Normally, I wouldn't either. However, occasionally, sometimes an odd mix of talent will infuse some life into an otherwise stagnant artist. To wit - Marty Friedman joining Megadeth. Rust in Peace was that which resulted and to this day stands out as Megadeth's best album to date. In my opinion of course. So I'm hoping that replacing Zakk Wylde with Gus G. will do the same thing for Ozzy. Who is Gus G? He's a shredder for sure, but he's one of my favorites. Formerly of Nightrage, who are NOT… -
Stupid Blog Post
9 Oct 2009 | 9:14 pmStupid?Yes.Why?Because it's about the game known as PLO.Here's what I've learned in about 50,000 hands....That's about it.Thought I knew what I was doing, I really did. Started off slow, losing about 3 buy-ins. Went on a 25 buy-in uptick, give or take, in about 10,000 hands. Next 10,000 hands or so, lost 20 buy-ins.I'm still up.But I'm pretty sure that when you get it in with the nuts and lose so often, well, I all can say is, "Head, meet wall."Smash. -

Reigning WSOP champ handicaps November Nine
6 Nov 2009 | 2:59 pmBut this weekend, as the latest edition of the November Nine plays out, Peter Eastgate's reign as World Champion will come to a close. "You can never stop the clock; there will always be a new world champion," Eastgate told PokerListings. "Why should I have any sad emotions about that? I'll just be the ex-world champion. Nothing is being taken away from me, maybe a bit of the attention, but nothing else." Eastgate defended his title well, making it deep again this summer before busting out 78th. Post a post...
25 Oct 2009 | 10:00 pmRather like an ongoing record again I shall bleet on about not really knowing what to say in this blog. I could talk about how the grinding isn't really going on right now, how poker is very swingy both emotionally, physically and financially, I could speak about hands that puzzle, surprise or even amaze even the unamazeable. But tbh i just can't be bothered. It's all a little dull. If im honest, recently i've suffered quite a few cruel rivers, and been taken to beat-aliciousville. 3 Oct 2009 | 5:35 amFor like the zillionth time im going to attempt to begin again with poker. After the let down of the wsope where i played ok but ran bad and didn't 'feel it', i now actually feel like a rock has been removed from my shoulders. Yeah a burden's been lifted because although a cash was important, the fact it didnt happen allows me to concentrate the mind. Id love to travel the circuit more and play decent structured mtts, rather than the limited live shoots my roll allows right now. A nice win would allow this, and would def make the grind easier. Right now i would like to droan on and on about why, but i wont. I'll just get a result and…

Online Poker Regulation Could Mean $41 Billion for US Government
6 Nov 2009 | 8:39 amAs the clock continues to tick, inching closer and closer to the official December 1st compliance deadline for the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act, a new report just may be enough to get the attention of lawmakers and cause them to slam on the brakes. Following a calendar year which saw the US government hand out billions of dollars to struggling giants in the automotive and financial sectors, and struggling to come up with ways in which to fund healthcare reform, what once was viewed as an a drain on society, may just be the proverbial cash cow that the government has been looking… -

Michelle and Maria Ho’s Sad Exit from Amazing Race
4 Nov 2009 | 9:31 amTiffany Michelle and Maria Ho, for all of their success at the poker table, just may have been the worst team ever to compete in CBS’s hit reality series, The Amazing Race. This weekend, the duo finished in last place for the 3rd time in 7 weeks and was finally eliminated from the competition. Ordinarily, one last place finish is all it takes to lose but due to some very lucky circumstances, their inevitable ouster was delayed time and time again. Perhaps the most embarrassing aspect of their defeat was that they never completed the task and simply gave up, marking the second time they did… -
Durrrr Widens Lead Over Antonius
3 Nov 2009 | 12:03 pmWhen it first was announced, the poker world was very excited about Tom “Durrrr” Dwan’s Million Dollar Challenge. Within a week, players were lining up to accept the challenge. However, now, almost 9 months later, it seems that unless you are Patrik Antonius, you are going to be waiting a very long time for your turn. Over the past week, Dwan and Antonius continued their long and sometimes drawn out battle, playing over 2,000 hands, bringing them to a total of 27,185 hands. For those who are a bit mathematically challenged, they are just over the halfway point and at the current rate,… -

2009 WSOP Main Event Tonight on ESPN 9 PM ET
2 Nov 2009 | 10:44 pmphoto by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com Phil Ivey advances his quest to poker's undisputed championship Most of the WSOP talk this week has been orbiting around Phil Ivey, poker's Superstar. Can he come from the back of the pack and charge to the lead to go heads-up with one of the other eight players? Chips and luck averaging out of a two-handed contest would make Ivey the favorite to take poker's biggest prize. That outcome would let it be known that a "King of Poker" had been crowned at a Coronation of Elimination in Las Vegas, the WSOP at the Rio All-Suite Resort. Hail! King Phil I. -

13 Sep 2009 | 5:46 pmPlayed some in the main game this weekend at the Hollywood. Loser $1 after 6 hours. Didn't play very well -- felt like I was the soft spot which was disconcerting.

If You Like...
1 Nov 2009 | 4:48 amOne way to broaden your poker knowledge and fun is to try a new poker game. I often recommend a new game to people who ask based on what their current favorite game is. In my home game, it was easy to introduce Omaha to the gang, since it's a lot like Texas Hold'em... only you get four hole cards instead of two. And you have to use two to make your hand. Since it tends to be an "action" game, the boys at the home game took to it immediately. If you're looking to add a game, here's a list of new poker games to add to your home game based on what you already like to play! If You Like... -

Burn cards aren’t just for ceremony
5 Nov 2009 | 2:20 amI’d wager most you readers know how to deal a hand of Texas Hold’em, but apparently not everyone knows that there is a reason behind why we deal like we do. In this case, the purpose of the burn card. Beginners may think it is just out of tradition that a card is burned (or discarded) before the reveal of community cards. Perhaps they just never thought about it. Chances are you know better, but if not, allow me to educate. After the hole cards are dealt and the players are contemplating the strength of their hands, the deck is typically out there for all to see. In the event of a… -
What Poker Can Teach Us
24 Oct 2009 | 2:15 pmI want to share this article with you, even though I may be late to the game on this one. I have already been emailed this link once and three of the poker enthusiasts I follow on Twitter have also brought it to my attention. What Poker Can Teach Us — By James McManus The article follows a brief history of poker from it’s French origins to it’s current popularity. I especially like how it highlights the game as a metaphor for the American mindset, crossing the Puritan values of our beginnings with the risk-loving cowboy. To top it all off, we get poker anecdotes from two of the most… -
iPhone App Review: PokerGauge

You may remember my past iPhone review for one of the first games available for the device, Apple’s own Texas Hold’em game. Today I have a deeper cut from the app store which is marginally less fun, but a hundred times for useful. PokerGauge is a mobile odds calculator that I deem the mobile odds calculator. While the marketplace for odds calculators on the App Store in no way rivals the plethora of tip calculators (seriously, who buys those?) PokerGauge isn’t the only one on the… -
My favorite hand can beat your favorite hand.
12 Oct 2009 | 7:06 amWhat’s your favorite pocket pair? I hear this question a lot. More accurately, I here people proclaim their favorite hold’em hole cards without my asking. Why would I ask? What else would it be? Amazingly they never share my favorite pocket pair, which is an ace followed by another ace. I’ve heard all the reasons why suited connectors are so great and why people cling to a hand they’ve had success with in the past. Really though, would you rather have the hand that holds a special place in your heart over pocket rockets? Does anyone believe any other two cards hold up… -

Ameristar Casino - Blackhawk, CO
6 Nov 2009 | 10:06 pmLast week I visited the Ameristar Casino in Blackhawk, CO. The Ameristar is located all by itself on Richman Street across the main town road (Hwy 119) from the rest of the Blackhawk business district. It has a 33 story hotel with a 10 story parking garage. Valet Parking is only accessible from the north bound lane of 119 but there was no need for it when I was there as parking was plentiful within a few steps of the elevators that go directly to the gaming floor. Dominating a table
6 Nov 2009 | 7:41 pmFrom what I can tell, most of my winnings come from sessions where I seem to dominate the rest of the table. The rest of the time it's just grinding for pocket change. For the purposes of this discussion, by dominating a table I'm referring to creating the circumstances where you're playing a lot of hands and a lot of people are folding to you (even on later streets). Basically when you seem to be in control of the table. Not just sitting there waiting for cards. There are two things that seem to allow me to dominate a table: 1: A very good run of cards. Doesn't happen often, maybe for an… -
Thought experiment
6 Nov 2009 | 4:22 pmDuring an evening of getting smashed to bits by awful plays, I started wondering. Suppose we set up Phil Ivey with a new account at our favourite internet poker site with $300 in it. He plays tournaments at the $10 level - he can only go up a level when the bankroll permits, say 30 buy ins, but can stay at that level if it drops. Assuming it matters to him, what does the bankroll look like after 10,000 hands? Why?

November 9, for the 2009 World Series of Poker Final Table
4 Nov 2009 | 9:44 amThere are really only two stories that you will hear about going into the airing of the final table, that is the story of Phil Ivey making the final table (with a shot at a third bracelet this year alone) and to a lesser extent the Story of Darvin Moon's amazing run. I am not saying Phil Ivey can not win but the odds on him doing so are long, what you are seeing is Full Tilt's PR machine in full gear. Which is great for poker because people love Phil Ivey. But the story is Darvin Moon, the logger from Maryland that would not even take endorsement money from the online poker rooms… -

Which set up an interesting heads up match on Late Night Poker in the UK. Luke has talked serious trash about Andrew in the past and continues during this show. -
Prahlad Friedman rap from 2009 Main Event
7 Oct 2009 | 4:30 amI have known Prahlad virtually since the day I started playing online poker, I certainly "practiced avoidance" in the big games on UltimateBet back in the day. His rap style is a little unique to say the least. I know it's easy to criticize and make fun of people but I have mad respect for anyone that put themselves out there like that. The 2009 version is infinite compared to the "Poker is Fun" one from back in the 2006. I am sure he will never live down the original rap but this last one was infinite compared to the Jeff Madsen rap. All of which is kind of a shame, Prahlad does not… -
WSOP online – why I think it’s a bad idea and will fail
25 Sep 2009 | 12:19 pmThe World Series of Poker is not the first entity to pretend to be one thing and then show up as something else. In fact they are not even the only televised poker entity to do so. While poker will get the headlines I think this deal was rooted in some old fashioned brick and mortar ideas. WPT online not only failed it failed miserably I know the World Poker Tour at this point looks like a marginal event with marginal venues but at the time WPT online came out the WPT was doing quite well. Certainly they had their issues, they were not very exposed in Europe (they could not do business… -
Annie Duke on Twitter – the two things you should never talk about
23 Sep 2009 | 5:14 amI do not write articles every day because every single day I really do not have anything to say. Today is not one of those days. I had to learn this lesson the hard way, so here it goes, consider it free consulting. Do not talk to customers about God or Politics. In both cases you are either offending half of the people or more. There were three tweets that were important in this regard. Never EVER talk about God Annie Duke on Twitter “On DWTS Kathy Ireland just said that when she first started she couldn't walk in high heels & It just proves anything is possible with God.” (DTWS is a…

Poker Bankroll Building on a stake deal_update 1
4 Nov 2009 | 12:20 pmI have started a stake deal with my good friend Artur. The deal is that I provide a starting bankroll of 2000$ and when he reaches 5000$ I receive 3000$. I have chosen to see the deal as a bet where I get odds 1.5 on my stake. Since I think the probability of success is more than 67% the EV on my bet is above 1. If you are a gambler you always take bets with an EV over 1 Here are some more details: Limits 0,5$/1$ The project will obviously stop when the bankroll hits 0$ I cannot pull out of the deal unless the bankroll reaches 5000$ The daily running stop loss is 300$. This for example means… -
The PokerBRB leaderboard concept
2 Nov 2009 | 2:19 pmThe PokerBRB leaderboard concept is simple. If you finish in the money (ITM) in our selected monthly freerolls and tournaments you automatically receive points for our leaderboard. The more ITM finishes you achieve, the more leaderboard points you will receive. At the end of each competition month the top 20 players on the PokerBRB leaderboard will receive exclusive entry tickets to ALL our monthly finals. If you for some reason for example only play our tournaments on Poker Nordica, but do well enough in them to finish in the top 20 of our leaderboard, you will receive a ticket for our Poker… -
Our new PokerBRB point system will be introduced in November’s tournament competition
2 Nov 2009 | 2:17 pmUp until now the PokerBRB point system has rewarded buyin tournament players with a 1 x buyin point bonus. From now on this point bonus will be 10 x buyin instead. We have done this to acknowledge that it is often harder to finish in the money in buyin tournaments. Here’s an example of how the new point system works: If you finish in 1st place in a 1000 player freeroll you receive 99,9 points - 100*(1000-1)/1000. With the new point system you will receive 199,9 points if you finish in 1st place in a 1000 player 10$ buyin tournament - 99,9+10*10. Hope you enjoy it! -
November’s 45$ refer-a-friend competition hosted by PokerBRB
2 Nov 2009 | 1:59 pmWe will be kicking of November’s freeroll competition with a 45$ Refer-a-Friend Competition. The rules are simple. Tell your friends about the PokerBRB freeroll league and if they sign up, remind them to add your forum username in the “Referred by” field on the sign-up page. In order to count towards the refer-a-friend competition standings your friends have to become active players. This is done by registering at least one Poker Site username in the PokerBRB database and participating in our freerolls. The competition will start today November 2nd and run until the 31st of November. -
How (not) to deal with the slow customer support at UK2net
1 Nov 2009 | 10:16 amOctober 27th the pokerbrb.com domain was up for renewal with our host UK2net. Somehow UK2net managed to screw up the DNS for the domain which resulted in our site crashing for 5 days until now. In the process they have managed to charge us 3 times for the domain renewal. This short summary sets the scene for the 5 days of frustration we went through until our site came back online today. I’m writing this piece because I do not want you to make the same mistakes we did when dealing with the customer support at UK2net. The customer support at UK2net works through a ticket system which…

Back home in Munich
26 Oct 2009 | 11:18 amSorry for not posting directly after my return but there was a lot to do in the last days.Unfortunately my last two small tournaments in Dublin hadn't been a success either. I booked a small win during a cashgame session at the Sporting Emporium ... but of course not enough to break even for the trip. But nevertheless this was a wonderful weekend. I really enjoyed meeting Silke and Thomas as well as Benny and his brothers again. We had a good time at and away from the tables. Congrats again to Cat O'Neill for her 4th place finish at the IPO. I had played at the same table with here for some… -
Sightseeing & Poker at the Sporting Emporium
17 Oct 2009 | 7:45 pmMy sightseeing trip through Dublin led me this time to the area between the Dublin castle and the Guinness brewery. Lot's of old buildings and churches around. Just have a look at the pictures at the end of this entry. The tournament at the Sporting Emporium had a great structure. They start with a 9k stack and 10 min. levels. Doesn't sound great? Well, the catch is that they add another 2.5 minutes to each new level. With the structure running 25/50, 50/100, 75/150, 150/300, 200/400, 300/600 and so on they reached 40 min. blinds al level 12. With 25 players that night it took almost 7 hours… -

Day 1 ... and final day of the IPO (at least for me)
16 Oct 2009 | 2:11 pmThat wasn't like expected although the day started very well. I was well rested and in a good mood when I arrived at the Regency. I was able to take a short peek into the main room while it was still empty and then waited with the others outside until the doors opened at around 12:45pm.Stephen and his team did a great job. That place looks really great. Feels like you're playing in a much more expensive torunament. Today's poker celebs included Padraig Parkinson and Surinder Sundar. Those two and several others had a bounty on their head (that's why the were wearing those football… -
The day before the IPO
15 Oct 2009 | 2:08 pmThis will be just a short update as I am very tired and need some sleep. The trip to Dublin was uneventful except for the fact that I arrived with 12kg in handluggage. Ryanair only allows 10kg and in Memmingen they forced every piece to be put on the scale. So I started to pack the most heavy pieces into my pockets ... just to put everything back into my handluggage once I had passed that control point. So ridiculous! On the plane I fell asleep immediately and even overslept the landing. I told you ... I am tired ;-)The Skylon Hotel is a nice place. Rooms are small but clean in general. And if…
