Yay! Poker is still relevant! We were fortunate enough to receive access to the WSOP November Nine ratings on ESPN. All in all, it’s good news and a sign that poker is still healthy. Ratings for the Monday night marathon were up 10-13% year-over-year, pulling .33 US HHs (459,000 viewers) that peaked with a .5. Given the competition against a key demographic (the show ran against Monday Night Football), this would be considered a strong win. The Tuesday WSOP night broadcast averaged .81 US HHs (1.16M viewers), down 6% from 2013. It peaked with a 1.01 and held steady at a .81 when Martin…

Not a Swedish Fish Seriously. Really. On Day 1A of the 2014 WSOP Main Event, we joked that Martin Jacobson needed to slow his roll because you can’t win a poker tournament on the first day. And then look at that. Martin Jacobson won the 2014 WSOP Main Event, banking $10M. He defeated Felix Stephensen heads-up for the title. The heads-up battle between Felixson Martinson Stephenjac Jacobmart Stephensen and Jacobson pitted two guys who outplayed the table and deserved to be there. Wait wait wait, that’s ballsy. Last night, poker’s ruling class all gathered at Binion’s to honor the game’s latest Hall of Fame inductees: Jack McClelland and Daniel Negreanu. The Poker HOF induction ceremonies have taken a number of different forms over the years. The 2014 iteration was closer in line with the Mike Sexton, T.J. Cloutier years–big banquet, formal, speeches, etc. It’s the way (we think) the HOF needs to be handled. Anything that elevates what we do in this industry is a positive, so the WSOP officials got the format and feel right this…

Daniel Negreanu is a shoe-in to find a spot in the HOF alongside the likes of Barry Greenstein. First, let’s start off with this: we generally like the Poker Hall of Fame process. It’s flawed. So it stirs discussion. And people discussing poker is Good for PokerTM. Some years, the public/committee nail their picks. The HOF induction classes with Seidel/Harrington, or Mike Sexton, for example, were spot on. Other years, they utterly whiff. The old man at the table this year is Bruno Politano, topping out the field chronologically at the crotchety age of 32. However, while all the remaining players this year may be young, they’re not exactly kids … at least not they way they were in 2010 or 2011. Maybe it’s just semantics, but what’s different this year is the absence of any player who’s already embarked on a…

  • Jose Canseco Lied about Missing Poker Finger – Angers News World

    Jeremy Olson
    21 Nov 2014 | 9:09 am
As a writer, it always pisses me off to spend time writing about a story…only to find out that it was a complete lie. I’m facing this prospect right now after discussing the journey of Jose Canseco’s poker finger. As the story goes, he shot it off at the end of October, which, to the best of my knowledge, really happened. But he then went on to claim that the surgically attached finger fell off during a poker tournament. Canseco more recently tweeted that he planned to sell the finger on eBay, presumably as a joke. Unfortunately, it turns out that the entire thing is a joke,…
  • 2014 WSOP Runner-up Felix Stephensen facing Tax Headaches

    Jeremy Olson
    21 Nov 2014 | 8:24 am
One of the good things about living in London is that you get to keep all of your huge WSOP payouts…or so it would seem. 2014 WSOP Main Event runner-up Felix Stephensen, who earned $5,147,911 for his effort, largely figured to pay zero taxes on his winnings. That’s because residents of the UK aren’t taxed on gambling winnings, as you can read about here. But not so fast because, as the Norwegian-to-English new site The Local reports, Stephensen will be pursued for over half of his payout. Here’s how Norwegian business expert Trond Erik Andersen explains the matter:…

That said, here’s a look at the noteworthy updates regarding the former baseball star’s missing finger. One of the biggest poker stories lately involves Ultimate Poker shutting down their Nevada operation. Less than two months ago, they also pulled out of New Jersey, meaning the first-ever regulated US online poker site is completely done. There will be many reverberations felt following UP’s closure, including fewer states/companies being interested in US iPoker for the time being. Additionally, the last three remaining sponsored players at Ultimate Poker will be looking for new employers. Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari is one of these pros. The 35-year-old, who has over…

He stated his belief that Hellmuth is “spineless” and a “cancer to this world.” He also blasted the Poker Brat for his self-promotional manner. In response to the personal attack, Hellmuth attempted to take the high road by tweeting, “Ouch, I was just attacked big time on a terrific poker forum: TwoPlusTwo. It was personal and it hurts, but I am proud of the man I am!” Well it seems like Colman has had some second thoughts since he returned to the same…

  • Frustating Day But Confident In My Play

    David
    20 Nov 2014 | 7:32 am
Yesterday was the first time I felt 100% confident with my lineups. Every single player had a great match up and was projected to see around 35 minutes of action. I wagered a total of $50 across 15 different cash games, even threw in some $5 games. Although I didn’t get swept, the day turned out to be a losing day (-$18). I wrote about the three players I would roster in every single lineup. As predicted, Dieng saw big minutes and performed well, producing 32.4 FDPs. The other two, well that’s a different story. I was very confident in my Iman Shumpert pick. He was coming off a 46…

Iman Shumpert.  Iman Shumpert has arrived, and I am not just talking about his rap career.  Minnesota can not play defense.  With Rubio out and Wiggins’ busy trying to stop Melo, I predict Shumpert to have a big night.  He matches up with Kevin Martin and Mo Williams?  Should be a fun night for Shump.  Save your money…

NBA statistical research has grown exponentially over the past decade. NBA coaches, scouts and fans are using advanced analytics to better understand the game of basketball. As a daily fantasy sports player you too can use this free public knowledge to gain an edge on your opponents. I like to use Pro Basketball Reference to find these stats. Player Efficiency Rating (PER). ESPN’s John Hollinger developed PER to show each player’s production per minute. I use PER when trying to predict how a backup player will perform when given minutes. Let’s say for example two shooting…

  • Why Daily Fantasy Sports is More Profitable than Poker

    David
    12 Nov 2014 | 10:18 am
It seems that a lot of successful DFS players have a strong poker background.  The terms “bankroll management” and “variance” always pop up in the DFS articles and podcasts I frequent.  Although my quest to become an online DFS pro has just begun, I already see two areas that make daily fantasy sports more profitable than online poker. Scalability With online poker, you start playing one table and master it.  When you can beat one table, you add more.  Typically, you reach a point where you have added so many tables that you go from a profitable poker player to a…

Former Congressman Ron Paul unleashed a scathing critique of beltway politics on the “Eurasia Review” website this week. He specifically attributed the uptick in congressional support for an iGaming ban to “crony capitalism” designed for the benefit of Republican super donor Sheldon Adelson. In true Texan fashion, Paul didn't pull any punches as he did it, either: “It is an open secret, at least inside the Beltway, that this legislation is being considered as a favor to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson,” he said. The legislation Paul is referring to is the “Restoration…
