Lately, when many Canadians think of the Senate — our unelected upper house of Parliament — they think of the Senate expense scandal (or possibly other scandals) which may be an issue in the general election this fall. That’s unfortunate, as today the Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce released its report on Digital Currency. The Committee offers a number of welcome, measured, and moderate proposals. Can you spot the liar? The New York Times asked that question — recognizing right out the gate this is supposed to be a poker skill — and presented an interactive exercise featuring video clips of people answering seemingly innocuous questions, to see, essentially, if you can spot a simple bluff. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/03/21/science/can-you-spot-the-liar.html (Apparently the body-language-reading techniques being taught at the TSA aren’t quite preparing their security agents for the WSOP.) So poker people are buzzing again about the promise of California for online poker. It’s true what RJ gaming reporter Howard Stutz says, that this market represents something of a holy grail for the liquidity dependent. But that’s also the reason I’ll stick by my assertions that California needs about half a country to go pro-poker before they get real about making a deal. Sorry for the buzzkill … but here’s a little Vegas Grinders outtake, recorded about three months ago, in which Andrew, Dave and I address whether or not online pokerers should be packing up their bags and…

I talked on Tuesday about the fairly poor turnout for World Series of Poker Event #55: $1,500 DraftKings 50/50 No-Limit Hold’em. Like the Double Bubble events at last winter’s PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, this was an experiment in ultra-flat payout structures. The reasoning behind such events is that players have been calling for years for flatter structures with more seats paid, better prizes for the early cashes and less money up top, saying that such a structure would be better for the casual players who like to walk away with something. Well, it looks like there’s a…

  • Travis Baker takes Nap after 2015 WSOP Seniors Victory

    Jeremy Olson
    24 Jun 2015 | 1:15 am
The Seniors Hold’em Championship has definitely become one of the more-popular annual events at the World Series of Poker. And this year was certainly no different, with 4,193 players turning out for the 2015 WSOP $1,000 Seniors Championship. This year, the standout player was definitely Travis Baker, who blazed through the final table in little time. In all, the final table took just five hours, the shortest of the 2015 WSOP so far. And once play got down to just five grinders, it only took Baker 35 minutes to finish off his victory. Just to emphasize how quickly the 50-year-old…

    18 Jun 2015 | 11:07 pm
The Event #28 $1,500 Monster Stack event was definitely another winner for the 2015 WSOP. 7,192 players registered for this tournament and created a $9.7 million prize pool. And it was Florida-based poker dealer Perry Shiao navigating through the massive field to win this event along with $1,286,942. Shiao was merely a contender throughout most of Day 4 and 5, waiting until deep into the final table to make a serious run at the gold bracelet. But even heads-up play saw him facing a 3:1 chip disadvantage to Eric Place. However, Shiao was able to overcome the odds and beat Place to grab the…
  • Christian Pham wins 2015 WSOP 2-7 Draw Lowball – First Time playing this Game

    Jeremy Olson
    13 Jun 2015 | 10:34 am
When Christian Pham started playing Event #23 of the 2015 WSOP, he suddenly realized something – he was in the wrong tournament. Pham watched in horror as what he thought was a $1,500 NLHE event turned out to be a 2-7 Draw Lowball tourney. And it was too late for the Minnesota-based poker pro to switch because the cards were already being dealt. But rather than getting depressed and letting his emotions take over, Pham calmed himself and simply watched. He saw how 2-7 Draw Lowball was played, asked for advice, and eventually become a pretty good player over the course of three days. In…

Following his victory over the 109-player field, Hellmuth dedicated his big win to his friend and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Dave Goldberg. “I’m dedicating this. I lost a friend about a month ago, Dave Goldberg,” Hellmuth said, while addressing the Rio crowd. “I’m going to give this bracelet to his wife and kids. This is for Dave Goldberg. Goldy, I love you.” Hellmuth has now run his…
  • Cristiano Ronaldo now a PokerStars Pro

    Jeremy Olson
    28 May 2015 | 1:00 pm
For the past few weeks, there has been speculation that PokerStars was eyeing a major footballer like Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo. And the rumors have finally been proven true because, just weeks after signing Neymar, PokerStars also inked a deal with Ronaldo. This deal seems like a natural fit because the Portugueese striker is a big fan of poker. In recent years, he’s instagrammed and tweeted pictures of himself playing the game. So unlike Rafael Nadal, whose signing by Stars came out of the blue, this deal makes a little more sense. “I’m looking forward to taking my game to the…

How do you deal your rundbad days, weeks, months? In the past 8 tourneys, Ive lost more 70/30 and 88/12 situations than I can count (and half of them have been on the money bubble). Getting it in good like 75% of the time and just losing in important situations constantly. Lost w AA pf 3 times in a row in dif games just to name one of a few bad beats. My hand reading has been on point and I've been studying tourney strategy for a while and I feel like I should be getting close to at least a final table but 13 out of 700 is the best Ive had in months. I find I can not focus when I have a lot on my mind and tend to stick to freerolls just to blow off steam and often play online as a little bit of a distraction. So my question is.... Do you play poker when you are down or depressed?? Do you find it helps to forget about your problems and take out your aggression? Or do you stay away totally when you are not well rested and have the right mindset sort of speak? Do you ever play with the feeling that u might lose your bankroll!? Or do u know when to quit??? Or do u play better during these times???

It seems that with the excitement of the WSOP kicking off, we missed our June instalment of Poker Rankings Update and, of course, a lot has happened since May. Anthony Zinno has carried momentum from last season’s WPT heater into the WSOP, battling it out for Player of the Year status with Mike Gorodinski. His performance has, in turn, propelled him into the Top 10 in both the GPI and Bluff Power Rankings. Scott Seiver, meanwhile, has not been having a great summer and is rapidly dropping on both lists, though that may change as he’s still in contention in the $500k Super…

World Series of Poker Event #64: WSOP.com Online No-Limit Hold’em is both underway and almost finished, playing down from 905 entries to a final table of 6 players in a single day, thanks to the speedy nature of online play. The prize pool is a relatively modest $859,750, considerably lower than the live $1000 Hold’em events, but this was to be expected given that legal online poker is still in the process of making its slow comeback into the American market. The event will resume and a winner will be determined tomorrow, with today being a travel day to allow the final six…

Brian Hastings is starting to heat up at the 2015 World Series of Poker, which is terrible news for the competition. Hastings not only just won his second career WSOP bracelet, but he cashed in on some big prop bets too. The professional poker player just won the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship (Event #27) on the weekend. He outlasted a field of 91 players to win the bracelet, but more importantly, he won roughly $500,000 in prop bets for winning the bracelet.
