It turns out that Ashley Judd isn’t the only die-hard Kentucky Wildcats backer out there. Phil Hellmuth recently admitted to FOX Sports that he has $20k riding on Kentucky’s ability to win the 2015 NCAA Tournament. This no doubt has to be difficult for such a stout fan of the Wisconsin Badgers, another one of the No. 1 seeds in March Madness. However, Kentucky, with their 35-0 record, looks unstoppable on their quest to perfection. However, Hellmuth did add that he’s also got some money on Wisconsin to make some noise. He notes that Frank Kaminsky is definitely a great…

    19 Nov 2014 | 8:33 am
Yay! Poker is still relevant! We were fortunate enough to receive access to the WSOP November Nine ratings on ESPN. All in all, it’s good news and a sign that poker is still healthy. Ratings for the Monday night marathon were up 10-13% year-over-year, pulling .33 US HHs (459,000 viewers) that peaked with a .5. Given the competition against a key demographic (the show ran against Monday Night Football), this would be considered a strong win. The Tuesday WSOP night broadcast averaged .81 US HHs (1.16M viewers), down 6% from 2013. It peaked with a 1.01 and held steady at a .81 when Martin…

Wait wait wait, that’s ballsy. Last night, poker’s ruling class all gathered at Binion’s to honor the game’s latest Hall of Fame inductees: Jack McClelland and Daniel Negreanu. The Poker HOF induction ceremonies have taken a number of different forms over the years. The 2014 iteration was closer in line with the Mike Sexton, T.J. Cloutier years–big banquet, formal, speeches, etc. It’s the way (we think) the HOF needs to be handled. Anything that elevates what we do in this industry is a positive, so the WSOP officials got the format and feel right this…

Daniel Negreanu is a shoe-in to find a spot in the HOF alongside the likes of Barry Greenstein. First, let’s start off with this: we generally like the Poker Hall of Fame process. It’s flawed. So it stirs discussion. And people discussing poker is Good for PokerTM. Some years, the public/committee nail their picks. The HOF induction classes with Seidel/Harrington, or Mike Sexton, for example, were spot on. Other years, they utterly whiff. If you flop a set, try to get as much money into the pot. If you miss, shut down and try to get to showdown. When you become more experienced you'll learn that you don't always have to flop a set to win the pot, but until then you can make things easy on yourself by keeping it really simple. Quantifying Variance is a new weekly column in which we’ll take a look at some of the math underlying poker, with the goal of understanding just how probable or improbable various occurrences actually are, and how to tell the difference between what is random and what is not. Variance is an unavoidable part of any game or sport, and overall a good thing: there is, after all, little point to a competitive activity when the winner is known in advance. Variance stems from two sources: from the game itself – let’s call that ludic variance – and from the players –…

Could online poker be the new battleground between live streaming service Twitch and video behemoth YouTube? A recent report from The Daily Dot says that YouTube will “relaunch its livestreaming platform with a renewed focus on live gaming and esports specifically.” In August of last year, Amazon acquired Twitch for $1 billion, beating out Google — the parent company of YouTube — for the live streaming site. That pitted the two video content websites as rivals, although Twitch focuses on live streams, while YouTube had primarily focused on recorded videos, before now.

Yes, at least in the mind of Daniel Negreanu, who blasted Jordan Cristos for his tanking tendencies via a blog post. Negraenu was responding to a Twitter argument about the WPT’s final-table structure, which now includes one-hour levels. This led to accusations that Cristos tanks far too much – something that definitely extends final-table play – and here are some of the tweets that king tanker sent out as a result: @SavagePoker poker is a game of patience and I’m fine with making k’s while they complain. #goodformygame #cameforme #tankingchangedmylife…
