  • Largest Pot in Online Poker Shipped to Antonius

    cprpoker
    18 Nov 2009 | 5:38 pm
It’s always a jaw dropping moment when seemingly normal men put gargantuan sums of money at stake, thereby putting their lives at the hands of fate. So when Patrik Antonius and the mysterious Isildur1 sat down for an epic session that resulted to the biggest pot in the history of online poker, a whopping $878,958.50, the whole poker community buzzed with unrepressed excitement. The fight for the largest pot was riveting, but it was Patrik Antonius who took home the bacon and, subsequently, the honor of holding the record. Isildur1’s Outrageous Bets Just recently, Isildur1 delivered a…

Poker, without a doubt, is an addictive game. It is, despite its non-violent nature, a brutal game – one wherein you can only win money if another player loses his. And it is exactly this element, coupled with the delicate balance of skill and luck required, that makes this game so addictive and so potentially dangerous. It is also what makes poker such a great theme to bring to the big screen. So it’s really no wonder that the movie, Shark Out of Water, an indie film about two men who struggle with their addiction to poker, was such a huge hit, earning four nominations in all at the Leo…

But, just as it is in boxing, only one player would emerge victorious. And this time, it was Dong-Bin Han who earned the title and became the first ever Korean to win an APPT event. An Exciting Interlude Day 4 of the APPT Cebu coincided with one of the most important and most awaited for events in the Philippine’s sporting history. It was the day when Manny Pacquiao,…

Joan Rivers, comedian actress and businesswoman, has wasted no time in letting the world know of her disdain for the game of poker and of its players. Time and time again, she harped at the members of the poker community with little restraint. And this time, she’s harping on the Godfather of Poker himself, Doyle Brunson. Now the question is, will the poker community take her verbal abuse docilely? Certainly not! How it all started Many will remember how poker players have started to infiltrate the other sectors of the media. Just recently, Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho have been…

After all, I have been folding almost 85 to 92% of my hands pre-flop, even some of those when I was in the small blind as well. The reason for most of my folding was that the table I was playing on was very aggressive and unless you had a strong hand or extremely good draw,…

I am sitting on a big stack the other day with over 80% of the chips on the table when I get dealt K-K. I raise to $25. The action folds around to a woman who moves all-in on me for another $50. I insta-call. She shows 9-9 and is dominated. The flop comes K-Q-10. I have top set and she has a gut shot straight draw. It is not the money at stake. I probably spent $75 already in tips for dealers and wait staff. I typically take two or three bad beats a session. For me, it is the emotional rollercoaster. I hate to lose, especially when I have the money in good. The turn is a Jack. She hit the…

A few hands after the one I want to share today went down like this: A player raises to $15 pre-flop and gets two callers. The flop comes all clubs. The first player checks and the second player bets the pot. The original raiser comes over the top another $100. The first player folds and the second player calls. The turn pairs the board. There is a $100 bet. The original raiser two-bets and the bettor calls. The river is a queen. Both players end up all-in. The first bettor flopped a flush. The original raiser shows pocket queens for a runner-runner full house. This donkey play happens more…

I am playing a $1-$2 game yesterday in seat 3 and get dealt A-A. After seat 1 raises to $15 with J-J, I re-raise to $50. Seat 5 behind me re-raises me by going all-in for another $200. Everyone folds around to me. I know this player has K-K. Yet, I get the sinking feeling that he will spike a set if I call. But how can I fold knowing he is dominated? I call and say “Your kings are way behind”. He shows pocket kings. Before the flop I make a comment that K-K is a $30 hand not a $300 hand. “Well, I did not know what you had. We have not played together before.” Exactly.

Players say I am dangerous in a full game. It is hard to read me or put me on a hand. If I am dangerous at a full table, then I am lethal heads up. I was in a cash game recently and took a bad beat on the river after moving all-in on the turn as a 98% favorite to win the hand. The other player felt bad (his first mistake) and offered to play me heads up in a freezeout (his second mistake). In other words, winner take all. I agreed. Here is what happened next: Hand #1: I raise and he folds. I take down the blinds. Hand #2: He raises and I fold. He takes down the blinds and we are back to even.

We all make mistakes. It is very rare for me to mis-read my hand or mis-read the board. Late last night around last call, I made a huge mistake that I hope I don’t make again for a while. Here is what when down: I limp in on the button with 4-5d. A new player at the table is in the big blind and makes it $12 to go. Action folds around to me and I call. Small suited connectors are not a typical raising hand for me, but it felt right. The flop comes 8-2-5. All clubs. My opponent bets out $25. My read is he has a marginal hand and no clubs. I call. For whatever reason, I thought the 8 was…

Moreover, it's mainly useful in tournament play, and even then, the would-be squeezer must pick his spots very carefully. As with any bluff, the squeeze play can only work against thinking opponents who are capable of laying down a good hand. And the bettor must be careful to wager just the right amount, so that he won't be giving his opponent good odds to call, while at the…

Two of the biggest money winners in online poker, Patrik Antonius and Isildur1, faced off in a pot worth an incredible $878,958.50!"Isildur1 opened for $3,000 preflop and Antonius called. The flop came 5h-7h-Qs and Antonius checked. "Isildur1"bet $5,000 and Antonius raised to $21,000.

Man, I was complaining about the bookies suggesting that Darvin Moon was the most likely to bust out Phil Ivey, and what does Ivey go and do? He gets busted out by Darvin Moon!Ivey moved all in with Ace of Clubs/King of Spades against Moon's Ace of Diamonds/Queen of Spades. It's understandable that Ivey would go all-in with that, and it's understandable Moon would call. Unfortunately for the greatest poker player in the world, sometimes the cards just don’t go your way. The flop gave Moon another Queen, and there was no help for Ivey.Sometimes that's just the way things go in poker, though.

It's been hyped for four long months, but the World Series of Poker Main Event is just around the corner. This Friday, November 6, in fact.Odds are currently pointing in Darvin Moon's favor, if only for the fact that he is the clear chip leader. Moon is an incredible example of how an amateur poker player can compete at the highest level in the sport. A logger from Maryland, Moon took out $130 satellite event to move into the WSOP Main Event. Alongside Steven Begleiter and Antoine Saout, Moon has no WSOP earnings to his name. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about the upsides and downsides that playing online poker professionally entails, some more obvious than others. Being your own boss and answering to no one is something that many people aspire for and I must say, it feels pretty darn good. Then comes the fact that you can sleep in every day of the week and make your own work hours. Waking up naturally is one of the most satisfying feelings out there and undoubtedly has a positive effect on daily energy/focus levels. Finally, the freedom to travel whenever (and in most cases wherever) you please is…

Last night I arrived home, after 28 hours, from Cebu. Cebu is the "second city" of the Philippines and played host to a 2009 APPT stop. In 2008 I referred to the Philippines as the Mexico of Asia (or, at the very least, Manila as the Tijuana of the Philippines). The location where the APPT event was held in 2007 and 2008, in the heart of the Malate section of Manila, could charitably be described as "sketchy" outside the walls of the hotel. This year the event was at a resort in Cebu. It sounded great in theory, but after my experiences at the "resort" in Cyprus for WPT Cyprus, I was…

Of course he has the skill to build up his stack, but we’re forgetting one more ingredient - luck. Like many of you, I was following the coverage via various poker websites. It seems to me that this final was far more about luck than skill. The amount of suckouts was unreal. Whoever wins it this year…
  • Poker is a Game of Skill

    30 Oct 2009 | 4:01 pm
Yes, poker is a game of skill. Of course, it’s not a 100% skill game and involves a fair amount of luck. Poker players know that the long game is what counts, and the more skilled you are at poker, the more you’ll win in the long run. Anyone can win in the short term with a good slice of luck. You know that already though, right? You might know this, but I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day who doesn’t know the first thing about poker. I explained that if they played in the tournament I was playing later that day, they could win it - even without knowing how to…

Remember the Durrrr Challenge? Yes, the challenge that was hyped up and talked about endlessly on poker blogs, poker websites, forums and communities. Yes you may have forgotten about it too, I know I did. But guess what? They’ve reached the half way stage. At the time of writing they’ve completed 25,145 of the 50K hands. Heck, it’s only taken 8 months (note: I could be wrong as am unsure exact start date - it was so long ago). Oh and Durrrr has taken the lead, and is now $700k up. I’ve heard Antonious say recently that they’d like to speed things up a bit, and…
  • Sponsors Not Over the Moon with Darvin

I’m sorry; I couldn’t resist the title of this post. But I love the fact that the chip leader going into this year’s WSOP final, Darvin Moon, has so far spurned any sponsorship deals from the major online poker rooms, such as Poker Stars and Full Tilt. Apart from Phil Ivey, who of course is already sponsored by Full Tilt, the other players have all been snapped up – and will be showing off their well placed logos in November’s final. I mean, who wouldn’t wear a logo for a reported $100k? Darvin Moon – that’s who! Poker Stars have benefited enormously from the WSOP,…
  • Pot Limit Cash Games

    Timmy
    6 Sep 2009 | 12:28 pm
Recently I’ve been playing more pot limit cash games in place of no limit hold’em. On many online poker sites there just isn’t the choice of playing pot limit hold’em, so it’s really just limited to the two big sites; Full Tilt and Poker Stars. My preferred choice at the moment is Full Tilt, simply because it’s the best site for cash games due to offering rakeback. The reason I like pot limit games rather than no limit is quite simple. I find it more skilful and there’s less players who are willing to make huge pre-flop bets - which I like to avoid.

I was just reading about how Patrick Antonius just won the largest online pot ever. Antonius, for those of you that may not know, is a Full Tilt Pro and is currently engaged in the Tom Dwan Challenge. Antonius happens to be one of the best online poker players in the world. While Texas Hold’em is what he typically plays live Antonius is also a very good Omaha player as well. As I have watched Dwan and Antonius go back and forth I started wondering about what it really proves. Seriously, I am not sure that playing at the highest stakes possible necessarily means you are the most…

This is my favorite stack of all time. I'll try to explain. The chip denominations are $25, $10, $5, and $1 from left to right. I also had some bills as you can see. This poker night was a night like no other and will most likely never be reproduced for as long as I play.Early on, I lost my first buy-in of $300 with KK to AA on a 9-high flop. Semi-cooler, but it happens. The guy playing AA never re-raised me until it was too late for me to fold. I re-bought for $600 and from then on never lost a showdown. We've had big stacks at Gucci Rick's before. But the pic you see before you represents the…

Here's another attempt at doing something that probably won't last as long as intended. Feel free to copy the idea, in fact, I encourage it. Here's the concept: Post a picture of a chip stack you've taken while at the tables and see if there's a story behind it. Even if it's just a small anecdote. Here's attempt #1:The date was June of 2008. I was bumming yet another free room off of Otis who was doing his duty to God and Pokerstars by covering the WSOP $50k HORSE event. If I recall correctly, it was a Wednesday and G-Rob wasn't slated to be there until the next afternoon.I remember my first…

The game was No-Limit Hold'em with a $250,000 buy-in and Dwan dominated from the outset, forcing George to rebuy when his aces held against the Londoner's big slick. As 2010 inches closer and closer, Patrick Antonius is currently online poker’s leading money earner, having raked in approximately $7 million. For Antonius, his methodical aggressive style has allowed him to continue a steady upward climb throughout the year, without too many enormous peaks and valleys. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Dwan. His particular feat on the other had, is rather dubious. Dwan has lost…

Most tighten up, some bet more freely, all have a number on their mind. The number of how many players are left. On a micro-scale, we can deal with the easy numbers. My favorite games are single-table tournaments with the top three places paying out. (These are also known by the somewhat counter-intuitive name sit-n-goes. Once you “sit” you can’t “go” until the game is over.) The bubble here is fourth…

  • Short Stack Strategy in cash games

    13 Nov 2009 | 1:12 pm
I do not care what limits you are playing it is frustrating playing against someone with a short stack. Most of these people are playing with a limited bankroll or just need a short stack to play disciplined poker. For most sites the minimum they will let you buy in for is 40 times the big short stack strategy

Instead of bitching and whining over bad beats I thought I would start sharing the mistakes I make in tournaments. By doing so I hope to reduce the number of mistakes I make and channel my frustrations into writing blog posts which is way more constructive than punching my desk. Although I am on an official big buy-in tournament break I still play the tournaments in my Poker tournament league. Today was a 2000$ guaranteed 6$ buy-in turbo 6 max tournament on Power Poker. I did quite well to build a decent 30000 chips stack and was in the money when I started making my first mistake on a…
  • Thoughts on making moves in online poker tournaments

    Mark
    15 Nov 2009 | 6:08 am
You don’t win hands by checking; you win hands by betting. My friend Artur keeps reminding me about this when we play online tournaments together. For some reason I tend to forget this simple mantra when I play online poker tournaments by myself. Yesterday for example I was playing a small stakes online poker tournament on Full Tilt Poker. I was doing quite well due to some good hands coming my way. I think I had around 8000 chips when I decided to make a move under the gun with A7 suited. I raised it up to 950, the blinds being 150/250, and got one caller in middle position. The flop…
  • All in Radio Poker show and a funny email from Mitchell Cogert

    14 Nov 2009 | 6:39 am
Last Saturday I talked on the All in radio poker show (click the link and go to 34 minutes into the show to hear my words of wisdom). I talked mostly about my favorite preflop moves from Mitchell Cogert’s “Tournament Poker: 101 Winning Moves”. It is no secret that I think Mitchell’s book is a must read for any serious poker player, so if you have some spare time check out his tournament poker blog. Later that week I had a pleasant chat with Mitchell and after listening to the radio show he sent me the following email which I found really interesting (I’m a sucker for poker…

  • I’m taking a long break from tournament poker

    8 Nov 2009 | 2:21 pm
My online poker tournament year has been absolutely terrible with only two final table finishes all year. Due to my bad run I am experiencing increasing difficulties dealing with the luck factor of the game. I feel like an injustice is done to me every time someone sucks out on me. Watching the final table action of the WSOP main event has just confirmed the fact that luck is a key factor in poker. You can be the best player in the world but if you are not lucky and those coinflips roll your way, you will never win a poker tournament. I have to to face that luck is just not on my side these…

    14 Nov 2009 | 6:36 am
A lot has happened in the last few days in poker so it's definately time for a new blog entry. Let's start with my personal things:Went back to Kufstein again and went card dead in the tournament again. There was only one remarkable hand: A pair of 3's that improved to quads right on the flop. I didn't get a big payoff in the tournament but one beside the table! The Poker Royale in Kufstein is having a big €200+20 Deepstack Event on Dec. 19th/20th and currently quads or better get you a draw on the lucky wheel. You can win satellite entries und up to an entry to the event itself. Guess what…
  • Some thoughts about the 2009 WSOP Final Table

    ShadowBJ21
    8 Nov 2009 | 2:05 pm
Spoiler Alert! - Don't read if you are waiting for the ESPN broadcast! Again I spent the whole night to follow the Final Table audio broadcast and I don't regret any minute. Not as exciting as the 2005 Final Table with Hachem, Black, Matusow but still very interesting.I feel very sorry for Phil Ivey and his bad beat. It would have been much fun to see him playing a big stack at the Final Table. This year obviously was the year of the bad beats. One of the toughest was the exit of my personal favorite Kevin Schaffel on 8th place (AA vs. KK with Kings improving to Quads). After seeing his exit…

Sorry for not posting directly after my return but there was a lot to do in the last days.Unfortunately my last two small tournaments in Dublin hadn't been a success either. I booked a small win during a cashgame session at the Sporting Emporium ... but of course not enough to break even for the trip. But nevertheless this was a wonderful weekend. I really enjoyed meeting Silke and Thomas as well as Benny and his brothers again. We had a good time at and away from the tables. Congrats again to Cat O'Neill for her 4th place finish at the IPO. I had played at the same table with here for some…
  • Sightseeing & Poker at the Sporting Emporium

My sightseeing trip through Dublin led me this time to the area between the Dublin castle and the Guinness brewery. Lot's of old buildings and churches around. Just have a look at the pictures at the end of this entry. The tournament at the Sporting Emporium had a great structure. They start with a 9k stack and 10 min. levels. Doesn't sound great? Well, the catch is that they add another 2.5 minutes to each new level. With the structure running 25/50, 50/100, 75/150, 150/300, 200/400, 300/600 and so on they reached 40 min. blinds al level 12. With 25 players that night it took almost 7 hours…
