Lately, when many Canadians think of the Senate — our unelected upper house of Parliament — they think of the Senate expense scandal (or possibly other scandals) which may be an issue in the general election this fall. That’s unfortunate, as today the Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce released its report on Digital Currency. The Committee offers a number of welcome, measured, and moderate proposals. The very first recommendation exhorts the Canadian government to “create an environment that fosters innovation for digital currencies and their…

With the acquisition of Victiv, Amaya Gaming (the parent company of PokerStars) has officially entered into the daily fantasy sports business. Amaya is in the process of rebranding Victiv as StarsDraft, and along with the use of the “Stars” part of PokerStars name, StarsDraft has a similar logo and theme to PokerStars; a clear indication Amaya plans to piggyback off the brand and success of PokerStars. I feel like there can be a resurgence in poker (live and online) if more U.S. states and markets around the globe legalize online poker, but the idea that poker will recapture the public imagination like it did in late 2003 is wishful thinking. Here are ten reasons there will not be a second poker boom. Reason #1: There are other opportunities for would-be poker pros In 2015, the young men and women who would have been attracted to online poker during the poker boom can now choose from any…

One of the biggest impediments regulated online poker markets in the U.S. are facing is how to combat the lack of liquidity created by ring-fenced markets. This isn’t exclusively a U.S. problem, as European markets have been hampered by the same issues, but the situation is exacerbated in the U.S. where the population in these ring-fenced markets is just a fraction of European markets. Even in New Jersey, the largest legal U.S. market, there are only so many table options available when dealing with a population of fewer than 9 million people. This lack of liquidity makes it difficult…

Casino poker rooms around the world have some little nuances in their rules that can lead to controversy. And there’s no better example of this than a recent story involving Dani “Ansky” Stern, who claims to have been ripped off at Casino Barcelona. It’s a rather long story – as is any poker hand where somebody believes they’ve been cheated out of – but the basic jest is that Stern claims he should have won half a €36,000 pot. Going further, he and two other players agreed as best they could (language barrier) that they’d run a pot twice;…

    Jeremy Olson
    28 Aug 2015 | 11:18 am
Any time you don’t hear about a poker pro who earned their fame during the boom years, it’s natural to assume that they’ve gone busto. So is this the case with John Juanda, a guy who isn’t discussed much in (American) poker circles any longer? Absolutely not, and the former high-stakes star is now making a very good living through prop betting. Another interesting tidbit about Juanda, who moved from Vegas to Japan four years ago, is that he hasn’t played much poker in the last year. Juanda recently discussed life in Tokyo and his prop-betting career through a…

    Jeremy Olson
    11 Aug 2015 | 5:35 pm
Jamie Vardy, who played a key role in saving Leicester City’s Premier League season last year, is now in trouble over a racist rant at a local poker room. The striker called an Asian observer a “Jap” after being told that the man had been looking at his cards. Vardy then proceeded to approached the man aggressively, before being held back by two of his Leicester City teammates, who were also playing high stakes poker. Footage obtained from the poker room’s security cameras back these claims up since Vardy is shown yelling at the Asian man. He also yelled at a…

    Jeremy Olson
    8 Aug 2015 | 6:25 pm
For almost a year now, a group led by businessman William Foley has been trying to get an NHL hockey team in Las Vegas. And 6-time WSOP champion Daniel Negreanu has been a large part of this effort, even leading a season ticket drive that generated an impressive 13,000 pre-sales. But it appears that Negreanu’s push for NHL hockey goes behind just helping out with a ticket drive and loving the game – he also wants to own part of a franchise. That said, let’s discuss Negreanu’s ambitions along with how he thinks it’s a lock that Las Vegas will have pro hockey.

If you had to honestly evaluate yourself as a poker player, would you say you were a good one? Also, what factors did you use to determine if you are good or not? I think being a 'good player' means different things to different people, so I'd like to know how you would answer such a general question. I am mainly an MTT player online. When it comes to online poker, I am not a good player because I consider someone being a good poker player as someone who can win and show profit consistently. And I do not show that. While, I have greatly improved over the years since I started playing and have…

The strategic situation Although these hands came after the ones I posted yesterday, my situation in the tournament wasn’t all that different. The tournament had a very slow structure up front, so even after the first break we were still well over 100 big blinds deep. Look for Value First A great way to build the foundation for your fantasy teams is by spotting value before anything else. For example,…
