The Good, the Bad, and the Meh. It’s an annual tradition since 2008—the Good, Bad, or Meh for Poker column! The ground rules are as follows: we’re looking for storylines and individuals with potential to grow the game and do good for the industry (i.e. an ambassador with a Dreyfusian willingness to self-promote and generally be an anti-Colman). As always, because someone is “good” for poker or “bad” for poker doesn’t necessarily mean that this person is a “good” person or a “bad” person. • Is Multi-Tabling messing with your Mind?

    Jeremy Olson
    29 Aug 2014 | 5:10 pm
For the past several years, many online poker pros have wondered if multi-tabling is messing with their mind. After all, the long-term effect of playing anywhere from 8 to 24 tables simultaneously hasn’t been studied. Even still, poker players don’t appear likely to slow down any time soon – especially when the profits from multi-tabling are so good. Just ask Randy “nanonoko” Lew or Bertrand Grospellier if playing multiple tables is worth it. But even elite pros might want to reconsider their position after reading a blog post by Haseeb Qureshi. The now-retired…
  • Andrea Dato explains why Italian Poker Players have to move

    Jeremy Olson
    28 Aug 2014 | 4:36 pm
Italy has produced a number of notable poker pros, including Max Pescatori, Luca Pagano and Dario Minieri. But according to Italian poker pro Andrea Dato, Itay isn’t a very good place for professionals to live. Dato, who’s fresh off a fourth place finish at EPT Barcelona ($481,299), says that limited stakes and high taxes are making it very tough to be a poker pro in Italy. Here’s a quick look at what he told PokerListings: One year from now, I’ll probably live in London. I will definitely move, because if you play in Italy, your development as a player is very limited.
  • Sponsorless Nacho Barbero, Angel Guillen talk Poker in their Countries

    Jeremy Olson
    25 Aug 2014 | 7:19 am
It hasn’t been long since PokerStars dropped Angel Guillen and Jose “Nacho” Barbero from their roster of sponsored pros. So are both players bitter and angry at Stars? If so, they did a great job of hiding it by showing up to EPT Barcelona and talking about how popular poker is in their respective countries. Starting with Guillen, he says that poker is “insane” in his country, despite the fact that it’s not 100% legal. This is especially the case with live poker, where the legal games only include some electronic tables lightly dispersed around Mexico. But…

It’s been several days now since Olivier Busquet and Dan Colman rocked the EPT Barcelona High Roller with their political t-shirts. Busquet sported a “Save Gaza” shirt while Colman had a “Free Palestine” shirt, inciting some backlash from players and PokerStars. CardPlayer Lifestyle’s Robbie Strazynski was among the outraged as he tweeted, “Doesn’t matter what “side” you’re on. #EPTLive is embarrassing itself by allowing @DanielColman_ & @olivierbousquet to wear those t-shirts.” As for PokerStars, they released a statement explaining…
  • Ivey and Antonius offer Invaluable Poker Advice

    Jeremy Olson
    18 Aug 2014 | 8:15 am
If there’s anybody that you’d want to take online poker advice from, it’s definitely Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius. After all, these two have earned more money than anybody else in online poker cash games. The two skilled pros recently met to offer some tips to players on how they study poker. Ivey says that a lot of his studying involves thinking away from the tables about certain hands. Specifically, he likes to consider what his opponent was thinking, their situational bet sizing, what he can do in the future, and his opponent’s profile of him. Ivey adds that what…

  • The Law of Averages

    Grundy
    15 Aug 2014 | 6:29 am
The law of averages is often quoted for an optimistic view of a player’s future. When applied to poker, it basically says that after a string of bad beats or weak hands, you are due a lucky break or strong hand. This positive luck supposedly makes up for the negative luck (unluck?) and maintains average luck. I’m all for optimism, but lets be a realist here. The law of averages is useless with small samples. If your memory alone can keep track of your poker hands, it is a small sample size. If you work with the statistics of months of quantified luck (I call this profits and losses)…
  • Liar’s Poker

    13 Jul 2014 | 9:51 pm
Liar’s Poker comes in a couple of different flavors. The first may be more comfortable as it is a tradition card game and the later is not. The game begins with each player starting with two quarters. Everyone is then dealt two cards down. The first player calls a poker hand. The next player has the option of either calling a hand which beats the previous hand or challenging the previous player’s call. If a person challenges the hand, then everyone’s cards are pooled to determine if the hand exists. If it does, the person who called the game loses one of his quarters and…

There is one point in every tournament when every player should adjust their play. It is when the money is almost within grasp and the bubble boy (or girl) is about to be crowned. Most tighten up, some bet more freely, all have a number on their mind. The number of how many players are left. On a micro-scale, we can deal with the easy numbers. My favorite games are single-table tournaments with the top three places paying out. (These are also known by the somewhat counter-intuitive name sit-n-goes. Once you “sit” you can’t “go” until the game is over.) The bubble here is fourth…

In this case, the purpose of the burn card. Beginners may think it is just out of tradition that a card is burned (or discarded) before the reveal of community cards. Perhaps they just never thought about it. Chances are you know better, but if not, allow me to educate. After the hole cards are dealt and the players are contemplating the strength of their hands, the deck is typically out there for all to see. In the event of a…

The sucker bet. (n.) A small bet made with a strong hand to increase the pot size. Usually made knowing that other players intend to fold to a large bet, but are willing to stay in for the cheap. Most players know this definition and may fold over cards and low pairs to avoid falling victim. This over compensation allows for the cheapest bluff in poker. I bet small every once and a while and the most common response goes something like this: “Now, that’s a sucker bet! I’m not falling for that.” And fold. They don’t always state their thought process, but often…

Often in an MTT, I get in the top 3 positions at one point or another. And give it a couple of rounds I'm down to 10-15th place because I do not play aggressively enough, or when I do play a hand, I don't get enough action. In turn, I generally bust just short of the bubble or somewhere a little above the mark (15th, 6th, 22nd etc...), and was wondering how I could improve my chances of getting that top spot. I've seen a lot of other big stacks bully the table, but I rarely have the guts to do so, even when I've got at least double everyone else's stack. In cash games I generally have the…

I've never had any connection issues with Tops or WPN. I just started playing on FullFlush and BetOnline about two weeks ago and progressively, things have gotten worse. I am constantly dealing with the software crashing, being disconnected from the network, and having massive periods of lag. We saw some serious action at the 2014 European Poker Tour’s Barcelona Main Event, which featured a €5,300 buy-in, and actually ended up breaking a record when all was said and done. Obviously they event garnished quite a bit of attention from poker players, and while we saw a grand total of 1,496 players buy-in to the event, it obviously took quite a while for us to make it down to the final table, and a ridiculously long time to crown a champion. By the time that we made it down to the final table, it took 15 hours before our championship was crowned. The heads-up battle alone went…

This basically sums up exactly how online poker works though, so obviously there’s a massive adjustment when you are playing poker online in comparison to playing in a live casino or in a cash game somewhere.
